Recap / The Interns S 7 E 4

Go To

Lobanov needs money, bad... and Gleb just found an opportunity to earn some: become a sperm donor. But the whole idea disgusts Semyon, forcing Gleb to press him harder into accepting. Ultimately, Lobanov gives in, after seeing the money Gleb just made on it — and then Gleb reveals that he just fooled him. Angry, Semyon forces him to go and donate his sperm, too.

Bykov tries a new method to teach interns. Instead of shouting on them, he would give them subtle hints, so they would think that they found a solutions by themselves, which would raise their motivation and confidence. He already has some results — with everyone, even Lobanov, but not with Varya. Her patient's symptoms suits two different diseases, but she can't choose which one is right one; Bykov tries to hint her that maybe the patient has both, to no avail. As Gleb explains to him, with Varya, any kinds of hints would always fail. Bykov still tries, and after several failed attempts he finally manages to receive expected answer from her... only for her to reveal that she already checked this opportunity yesterday, and came to conclusion that he has neither of the those diseases; now, when she has a blood test's results, she is proven right (and has an actual diagnosis which explains why Bykov himself was fooled). Bykov is so shocked (this time, positively) by this, he invites her to celebrate it in bar.

Phil complains to Kisegach about accountant's incompetence which led to salary being delayed by four days (it's very serious for him, because he always plans his budget). Except... he forgot to think that said accountant is Olga, and if he insists on punishment, it would hurt her. Or, rather, he somehow thinks that it would not harm her in any way. Kisegach tells everything to Olga, who decides to teach him a lesson, by exaggerating the situation to the point he would feel regret. Since she never let Phil know that she is aware about it being him who complained, Phil, to make her feel better, lightly injures his arm (just to the blood, so he may cover it with zelyonka and pretend that it being consequences of hitting the complainer)... and then Kisegach tells him that the guy whom Phil allegedly beaten now wants to sue him, forcing him to admit the truth. Now, Olga is very angry at him, because now he's lying to her — just like Semyon before their divorce...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Doublethink: Phil and his complaint about accountant's failure (said accountant being Olga, his girlfriend). His "arguments" in favour of his position when he complains to Kisegach? "Olga-accountant" is guilty and must be punished, but "Olga-his-girlfriend" is unrelated and would not be harmed". Before Kisegach manages to answer anything to that, he preventively shuts her up by telling her that legally she can't refuse his complaint, and leaves. Fortunately, Anastasia tells everything to Olga (if she receives a second complain, Kisegach would be forced to do something, wether she likes it or not), who decides to teach Phil a lesson.
  • Honor Before Reason: Even when Gleb tell him what his method would not work on Varya, because she's completely blind to any hints, Bykov still tries until the late night, to prove that Kupitman (who called the whole method ridiculous) was wrong.
  • Hint Dropping: Bykov's new method — to provide interns with hints hidden in his sarcastic comments to their stupidity, so they would come to correct results "by themselves" — works flawlessly on everyone (even on Lobanov)... except for Varya, who is completely blind to Bykov's hints that her patients may have both illnesses she can't choose from. Later Gleb explains to him that Varya just can't understand any hints, period. Bykov tries again anyway (Kupitman previously called his method "ridiculous"), and in the very end of the day she finally gets it — and it turns out that she already checked Bykov's version even before he suggested it, and disproved it; she just lacked the last clue to pick the right diagnosis until she got a blood test's results (proving that the patient has an unrelated third disease).
  • Lawful Stupid: Phil complains to Kisegach about accountant's failure, which led to everyone being delayed their salary by four days. Except... this accountant is Olga, his girlfriend. He sees nothing wrong with it, despite Kisegach pointing out otherwise, and his "argument" in favour of his position borders on outright Doublethink. When this fails to convince her, he just tells her that she can't refuse to accept official complaint, and leaves.
  • Preemptive "Shut Up": Realising that he's about to lose the argument, Phil just tells Kisegach that it's an official complaint, so she can't ignore it, and leaves without further attempts to justify his position.
  • Pull the Thread: When Phil learns that Olga was actually hurt by his reckless decision to fill a complaint, he hits a container to cause small wound which he promptly covers with "zelyonka", and lies to her that he kicked "that guy's" ass, so everything should be fine now. Realising that he would rather lie than admit his faults, Olga cooperates with Kisegach to pretend that the dude beaten up by Phil plans to sue him, forcing Phil to admit the truth.
  • Take a Third Option: Bykov tries to give Varya the hints that her patient may have both illnesses from which she can't choose one, at once. Instead, she later (correctly) realises that he has none of them, and it's some unrelated third disease, meaning that it is Bykov who was wrong all along.
  • Troll: After seeing an ad in a magazine, Gleb presses Lobanov into accepting becoming a sperm donor (something which is too humiliating to even discuss aloud). He even borrows some money from Lyuba to make it look like he already did this. When Lobanov realises that he was fooled, he forces Gleb to do it for real.
  • Wham Line: Olga tells Phil that he's no better than Semyon — he's exactly the same as him: a liar. Considering that Lobanov's lies were the reason for their divorce, it's a huge red flag.
