Recap / The Interns S 4 E 4

Go To

Gleb is in deep depression after his breakup with Alisa, and just locked himself in his apartment, dropping any communication with outside world, including with his mother. Since he refuses to let her in, Kisegach decides to send somebody else (preferably somebody who doesn't drink). She choses Varya. But Varya, in attempt to talk him out of his depression, reveals that she's just as lonely and unhappy as him, and the two ends up being drunk and sleeping together.

Lobanov meets his old friend Evgeny, who chose to become a dancer. Lobanov, for whatever reason, believes that all dancers are gays, and decides to ask Kupitman for help. Kupitman agrees (after Semyon bribes him with cognac, of course), and interrogates Evgeny. After learning that Evgeny is not, in fact, gay, Kupitman decides to not tell this to Lobanov, and instead warn him that his aggressive homophobia may mean that he's a latent gay himself. This causes Semyon to panic, and he rushes to "apologise" to his friend, while claiming that he's not "into that". When Evgeny fails to understand his "hints", Lobanov snaps and just calls him a f***t, which results in Lobanov being hit in the face, and their friendship collapsing into dust.

Bykov accidentally ruins Kisegach's skirt... right before the visit from a journalist. His attempts to hide this almost works... and then Bykov ruins everything at the last moment, which allows journalist to take several good shots. When yelling on him, Kisegach remembers about Gleb, and decides to pay him a visit and check how Varya has dealt with the situation. When Kisegach and Bykov arrives, they find them sleeping in one bed, drunk, but at least happy for once.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Armoured Closet Gay: Invoked. Kupitman tells Lobanov that his extreme homophobia can mean that Semyon is a latent gay himself. The idea scares Semyon so much, he rushes to Evgeny to politely decline his offer, trying (and failing) to explain that "he's not into that", without clarifying what "that" means until he snaps into his usual homophobe mode, and insults Evgeny by calling him a f***t (despite him not even being gay to begin with). Obviously, Evgeny loses any will to help him after that.
  • Buffy Speak: As it always happens when Lobanov is nervous, he can't adequately explain what he's trying to say to Evgeny, at most giving him something like "I'm not a homophobe, but I'm not into that".
  • Clothing Damage: Bykov accidentally ruins Kisegach's skirt. Right before her meeting with a journalist. Now she must somehow hide the fact that she doesn't wear a skirt from him. This almost works, but in the end Bykov ruins everything by leaving at the wrong time and uncovering her; it's not clear whether he did it accidentally or deliberately.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Lobanov tries to explain (in his usual crude and awkward manner) that while he is not gay himself, he is "okay" with his friend Evgeny being gay. When Evgeny doesn't understand him, Lobanov snaps and outright call him a f***t, which predictably ruins their friendship.
  • Intimate Psychotherapy: Varya's attempts to help Gleb with his depression results in them speaking about her "relationship" with that stripper, then getting drunk, and then having sex. This actually works... for both of them.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Lobanov's homophobia bites him in the ass and ruins his only chance to get a new place to live; even though Evgeny isn't gay, he certainly doesn't take well being called a "f***t", resulting in Semyons being hit in the face.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Once again, Kupitman can't resist temptation to manipulate the other people. This time, he "helps" Lobanov with his "gay" friend, by deceiving Semyon into thinking that Evgeny is really gay, and then saying that Lobanov's aggressive homophobia may be a sign of latent homosexuality, knowing that Lobanov is too dumb and short-fused to make anything good out of that revelation. And indeed, Lobanov botches everything.
Kupitman: No, Lobanov, you're not a homophobe. You're an idiot.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Lobanov just can't process the thought that "dancer" is not equal to "gay", so when he learns about his friend's hobby, he instantly assumes that his friend is now gay (though there's also Evgeny offering Semyon to move into his house with him). He doesn't start a conflict right away, but he makes a mistake of asking Kupitman for help, which predictably makes the situation worse.
