Recap / The Interns S 3 E 18

Go To

Lobanov has a new "business idea": he and Lyuba would buy books, and then sell them to the patients (for much higher price). To force them to buy books from them, Lobanov confiscates every patients' books under whatever crazy excuse he can find. This backfires, because patients now believes that they can't read in the hospital — which means, there's no reason to buy books. They then tries to cooperate with Kupitman, to sell books in Venereology.

The hospitals which takes initiative and creates something for their patients (like fresh fruits for young mothers, or free sanatorium) receives additional fundings, so Kisegach must create something on her own, no matter how ridiculous it would look like. She asks Varya for new ideas, but unfortunately, her suggestions are either expensive, ridiculous or both. But then she learns about Lobanov and Lyuba's attempt to sell books. Knowing what would happen if their boss finds out about their scheme, Lyuba and Semyon, in order to cover their asses, pretends that they planned to gift those books. Kisegach realises that this is exactly what she needs: this "charity" makes her look good, without costing anything to the hospital.

Gleb learns that Alisa is Bykov's daughter. He now has an idea: he can date her just to spite Bykov. But Bykov, after learning about it, tries to forbid Alisa to date Gleb... which is exactly the reason why she would date him — to spite Bykov, for ordering her around and for abandoning her mother years ago. But now Gleb is not sure if he even want to continue.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Lobanov and Lyuba's attempt to earn some money (by confiscating the patients' books and then selling them new, overpriced ones) backfires when Kisegach finds them, forcing them to pretend that those are gifts (knowing how she would react to their scheme).
  • Boyfriend-Blocking Dad: Because yesterday Alisa failed to appear at home (or even call him), forcing Bykov to spend a whole night worrying about her, now Bykov threatens to just lock her for the rest of the day, until he can arrange her shipment back into St. Petersburg, to her mother. Then Bykov learns that she spent that night in a night club with Romanenko, and decides to "protect" her from Gleb, no matter the cost:
Bykov [to Gleb]: If I would see you near her again, out of your sexual characteristics, you would only preserve srubble — and even that is uncertain!
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Bykov wants Alisa to stay away from Gleb; not only because he hates him, but also because Gleb not long ago outright told him that he wants to date Alisa just to spite Bykov. Unfortunately, this is exactly why she would date Gleb anyway — because she wants to spite Bykov, too, for leaving her mother. Though she still gets offended by being a "one-time use lover" for Gleb, just for his revenge, and decides to teach him a lesson... before continuing a "normal" date.
  • Do Wrong, Right: When Semyon and Lyuba offers Kupitman to be a part of their scheme, he gets offended... because they offered him "only" 30%, and he wants "at least" 50%.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The reason why Lobanov's "business plan" fails: he confiscated books from his patients under whatever random excuse he can find (like "it could be harmful for you"). So, when Lyuba tries to sell the patients the other set of books, they states those same excuses as the reason why they can't read books (and so, have no reason to buy them).
  • No Guy Wants to Be Chased: Gleb decides to not pursuit romance with Alisa because of her being too persistent. He only continues when he learns that she's Bykov's daughter, which he can use against him. When she learns about this, but decides to do it anyway, because she also wants to spite Bykov, Gleb has a second thought and tries to avoid the whole situation. Only after this Alisa reveals that this was her way to tell him that his whole plan was rather disgusting.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: Gleb decides to use Alisa for revenge on Bykov, via one night stand-in with her. She learns about this, and reverses the situation, with him being "one-time use lover". He learns his lesson, and after that they actually comes along.
