Recap / The Interns S 3 E 16

Go To

Kupitman quits drinking... and now is in deep depression because of this. To snap him out of it, Bykov introduces him to video games; this seemingly works... but then Kupitman decides that he would learn faster when drunk, which leads to Kisegach punishing them both, by forbidding both booze and video games.

Gleb starts constantly pranking Lobanov, to Semyon's anger. Semyon quickly gets tired and decides to strike back. He finally succeeds, by cooperating with the other disabled patients (at least one of whom Gleb offended after mistaking for Lobanov). They takes revenge by covering Gleb's lover half in gypsum, forcing him to walk in chicken-like manner.

Levin has a chance to move for one-year internship into American hospital Princeton-Plainsboro, but he needs Kisegach's permission. Both Kisegach and Bykov agrees, but Lyuba takes it as a sign of him loving his career more than her. Following Varya's advice, she decides to let him go, since this is really a once-in-a-life chance for him... but then he states that he'd planned to do so anyway, regardless of her opinion (and lied about being ready to give it up), which breaks Lyuba's heart.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Alcoholic: Kupitman quits drinking... and now he is in deep depression because of this. Bykov decides to introduce him to video games, in attempt to "cure" his depression; this works, but Kupitman decides that he would learn faster when drunk.
  • All Take and No Give: When Lyuba learns that Levin lied to her about refusing his new internship to stay with her (and she was ready to let him go after all!), she tells him that she is tired of him never sacrificing anything for her, always bending the situation to suffer as less as possible, at her expense, and that their relationship is over.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Platonic variant. Before he leaves, Levin has a friendly hug with Gleb, Varya and even Semyon, showing that he does consider them to be his friends, despite both Gleb and especially Semyon frequently mistreating him. It contrasts with how ugly he breaks up with Lyuba over his egoism.
  • Bookend: The episode starts with depressed Kupitman seeing everything in monochrome. It ends with depressed Kupitman and Bykov seeing everything in monochrome.
  • Cargo Envy: Lyuba is jealous of Levin towards his new internship, and tries to persuade him into refusing it. She snaps out of it when Varya explains to her that this is once-in-a-life chance for Levin, and it would be cruel and selfish to take it away from him.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: To demonstrate Kupitman's (and later Bykov's) depression, during their point-of-view moments, everything is shown to be in monochrome.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Kupitman fell into depression after he quit drinking. Bykov tries to snap him out of it, by introducing him to video games. This leads to Kupitman becoming addicted to video games... and starting drinking again, resulting in him being unable to work at all. Bykov's attempt to fix this mistake leads to Bykov himself becoming drunk together with Kupitman. Kisegach punishes them both, by forbidding both booze and video games.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Kupitman is depressed over quitting drinking, so Bykov tries to distract him on video games. Not only it doesn't work (and makes situation worse), it results in Bykov getting punished, by also banning the video games.
  • Out of Focus: Besides being the one who told Lyuba that if she loves Levin, she must stop pressing him into refusing his once-in-a-life chance for internship in elite clinic, Varya barely appears in this episode.
  • The Prankster: Gleb just can't stop pranking Semyon, despite Lobanov telling him several times to not doing that. One time he even hides Lobanov's crutches on top of the cabinet (Semyon specifically told him that he went too far with that one). Semyon grows tired of this, and decides to take revenge, by any means necessary.
  • Put on a Bus: Levin disappears from the show, because he moves to the USA for one-year internship in Princeton-Plainsboro.
  • Shout-Out: The American clinic which invited Levin for internship is called Princeton-Plainsboro — the hospital from House.
  • Wham Episode: Another major breakup, this time between Levin and Lyuba. And this one has even less chance to ever mend.
