Recap / The Interns S 12 E 11

Go To

To Gleb's annoyance, Sophia continues seeing Polina as her enemy. Tired of this, he asks Polina to help him with stopping this "war". Maybe she can befriend Sophia? Polina suggests to try shopping. Sophia at first refuses, but Gleb tells her that it's a great opportunity to learn Polina's weaknesses without her expecting anything, which convinces her. But then Phil asks Gleb whether he's sure that it's a good idea, and Gleb realises that spending so much time near Polina would cause catastrophic effects to Sophia's sanity. Unfortunately, it's too late to call them off. Gleb starts worrying more and more, imagining all the possible scenarios how their trip can go bad, but then he hears a door ring — it's Sophia. She's wasted and can only say that she's feeling bad. Gleb thinks that he unwillingly sent her to her personal hell, but before he has a chance to try to apologise, Sophia tells that she and Polina are now best friends!

Kupitman meets one of his old (girl)friends, Sveta. The problem is, he is in relationship with Lyuba, and Sveta would be an odd one out. To have excuse to talk with Sveta, Kupitman lies to Lyuba that he's sick. Kupitman quietly tells Sveta that he's taken, which she takes rather well, but Lyuba enters at the worst moment and mistakes him for cheating on her. Kupitman rushes to Lyuba to apologise, only for a big, threatening man to tell him that she's "busy" and order him to go away. He decides to not test his luck, realising that if it goes to fight, he stands no chance. What he doesn't know is that's Lyuba's neighbour Vladimir whom she asked specifically to teach Kupitman a lesson.

Timur recklessly drops his bag on Bykov's table, hitting the keyboard — and accidentally removes a pause in Bykov's video game (some zombie-themed FPS), leading to immediate game over and wasting hours of attempt to pass a hard level. Now, Bykov wouldn't let him go alive, unless he re-completes what he ruined. It doesn't matter that Timur isn't skilled at shooters (or not even their fans to begin with): he's ruined it, so he must fix it. But since Timur is a complete newbie (he doesn't even know the controls), he dies without much progress so often, he eventually gives up and starts looking for help. The first one whom he asks is Gleb, a gamer himself. But Gleb refuses to participate the instant he hears that it's a punishment from Bykov, stating that he would not mess with Bykov's orders (or touch his PC unless necessary). Timur then tries a little boy, who shows interest at first, but loses all enthusiasm the moment when his character gets eaten by zombies, which drives him to tears and earns Timur scolding from his mother. Timur tries to just ask Bykov to give him a night shift and stop this, but Bykov replies that he wouldn't go anywhere until he does what's ordered, even if it means staying here forever. But Timur fails to achieve any progress, even after many hours, and after yet another game over, he's too tired to even feel angry. He decides to take a small break, but while cleaning his hands after using a toilet, he hears a weird sound from one of cabins. Then he looks into a mirror, and sees... a zombie! Another one tries to force its way into the restroom, and Timur barely manages to escape with his life — only to see that the hospital is now in ruins and completely overrun, with anyone being either dead or zombified. Timur tries to quietly escape while no one sees him, but then he sees Lyuba, who seemingly survived, and tries to attract her attention — only to see that she's a zombie, too, and scream in panic, attracting every zombie to himself. He manages to barricade in on-call room, but zombies breaks in. And then Bykov (dressed as an action hero of sort) comes to his rescue and starts shooting zombies... And that's when Timur awakes and realises that he fell asleep in on-call room. Bykov is indeed here, playing the game by himself, realising that he can't rely on Timur. Timur goes to bring Bykov some coffee, but suddenly sees another zombie! Thankfully, turns out it's just Kupitman (who drunk himself to that state after what's happened between him and Lyuba). The next morning, Sophia accidentally drops her bag on the keyboard, too, once again killing Bykov's character...

This episode provides examples of:

  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • Timur thought that this is another Nightmare Sequence with zombies. Nope. It's drunk Kupitman; with his body language, it's hard to tell the difference.
    • Drunk Kupitman says that he "no longer can hold it within himself". You (and Bykov) expect Internal Reveal? Nope. Kupitman just throws up due to alcohol poisoning.
  • Cassandra Truth: When Timur, due to his recklessness, causes game over in the game Bykov had left on pause, he doesn't believe Alexei when he says that this was Bykov's game (and that Timur is now a deadman), thinking that no sane person would play video games on work while so much needs to be done. Unfortunately for him, Bykov isn't normal "sane person".
  • The Cavalry: During Timur's Nightmare Sequence, when he gets seemingly overrun by zombies, Bykov (dressed as some kind of action hero and armed with a shotgun) appears and starts shooting zombies, while mocking him for his incompetence.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Sophia leaving Polina alone didn't last, and she continued seeing her as an enemy. She still sees her every action as intentional attack against herself. This annoys Gleb to no end, so he sends her with Polina to go shopping, in hope that they would befriend each other. It somehow works, finally ending their conflict for good.
  • Description Cut: Timur doesn't believe Alexei's words about Bykov, stating that "Bykov is sane enough to not injure valuable worker". Cut to Bykov strangling Timur.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: When Kupitman thinks that he may lose Lyuba due to his own mistakes, he consumes so much alcohol, that Bykov comments that this is extremely high amount even by Kupitman's standards. He actually requires medical attention after that.
  • Face-Revealing Turn: It seems that Lyuba is the only non-zombie here (besides Timur)... then she suddenly turns her head and jumps to the window, screaming, revealing that nope, she is a zombie too.
  • Harmful to Minors: After failing with Gleb (who refused to being involved in anything Bykov-related, especially if playing that game was specifically Timur's punishment), Timur tries to hire a little boy to play that video game (kids loves games, so the boy is likely to be better at it than him). Unfortunately, the boy gets very scared when he sees the zombies devouring his character, which earns Timur scolding from boy's mother.
  • Here We Go Again!: Episode starts with Timur accidentally ruining Bykov's game by throwing his bag at his computer, and being forced to replay it over and over, to the point he starts seeing nightmares about zombies. Episode ends with Sophia making very same mistake.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: While Kupitman decides to not go with Sveta after all, and warns her that he is now taken (which she takes very well and congratulates him), when Lyuba arrives, she interprets what she sees as him cheating on her (Kupitman, who not long ago lied to her about being "sick", is hugging another woman, with cognac on the table — what else could it be?), ignoring his attempts to describe the situation.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • After sending Sophia with Polina to go shopping, Gleb realises that spending so much time near Polina would cause catastrophic effect on Sophia's sanity. Unfortunately, there's no going back now. He repeats this reaction again when Sophia returns and seemingly confirms his fears, but fortunately it turns out that all went well.
    • After Sophia and Polina becomes best friends, Gleb realises that their friendship is so weird, it's even slightly scary. And it's his fault.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Timur's nightmare about zombie-infested hospital. And this is after only the first day playing that video game...
  • Out of Focus: Alexei has brief appearance in beginning of Timur's plot, and as one of the zombies, but otherwise has no major role in this episode.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The instant Alexei realises that Timur just ruined Bykov's game, he warns him that some serious shit is gonna happen, and runs away. Timur doesn't believe him... and suffers for it.
  • Tae Kwon Door: During his Nightmare Sequence, Timur defeated a zombie who tries to attack him in restroom by opening the door just when he presses hard enough, resulting in zombie running by inertia right past Timur, allowing him to escape.
  • That One Level: In-Universe. Bykov spent lots of time trying to pass one level in one video game he's playing (we don't know much details, aside from that there's a town full of zombies, one shotgun and two packs of ammo), only for Timur to ruin everything by his recklessness. Now it's up to Timur to restore what he ruined. Unfortunately, he's absolute newbie, and gets killed by zombies again. And again. And again...
  • Too Dumb to Live: During his Nightmare Sequence, Timur actually has a good chance to stealthy walk past zombies, but he screams and attracts attention of every single one of them.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Timur thinks that no serious specialist would waste working hours on video games. He is unaware that Bykov, while specialist, isn't all that serious.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Whatever video game Bykov is playing (and Timur has to play for him after his screwup) is set in the zombies-infested city. Eventually, due to stress caused by this task, Timur starts seeing nightmares involving zombies in their hospital (with everyone but Timur himself being either zombified or dead).
