The One Where Diane and Liz Topple Democracy

Roland Blum wants to work at Reddick-Boseman. Lucca tries to talk to him like an adult, and Blum pulls out his new assistant, Gary Carr.

A woman wants to know who to sue for the voting machines changing her vote. Liz and Diane supoena the software so they can look for malware. The Book Club wants to use the malware to steal Democrat votes.

Roland threatens to reveal to the public that Carl Reddick sexually harassed employees. Adrian tells Marissa to dig up dirt on Blum and talks to Liz about taking control and going public with it themselves.

Tropes

  • Adam Westing: Actor Gary Carr plays actor Gary Carr.
  • As the Good Book Says...: Blum expresses his frustration with the perjury charges by shouting a quote from the Bible referring to hellfire.
  • Brick Joke: Gary demonstrates a joke about how actors realize they forgot their wallet versus how regular people do it. When he doesn't want to leave Lucca's place later, he again pretends to be an actor who realized he forgot his wallet.
  • Call-Back: The time when Roland put his dietician on the stand to pretend to be a former insurance salesman comes back to bite him.
  • Fake American: In-universe, British Gary speaks with an American accent until Lucca finds him out.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • When Lucca calls him on being an actor and not a real lawyer, Gary explains that he got a part on a law show.
    • Lucca explains to Gary that most of her office work is just her going through paper. Gary tells her that if she were on tv, she'd have someone with her so she could explain what she was doing to the viewers.
  • Self-Deprecation: Diane says that she doesn't have to believe in the principles she's arguing, she's a lawyer.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Two associates talk about when Gary was on Downton Abbey.
    • Marissa has seen Gary on The Deuce.
    • Gary says the original idea for The Apprentice was to have a new CEO every week, so Martha Stewart could've been president now.
  • Show Within a Show: When Lucca tries to find a clip of Downton Abbey online, she finds the informational cartoon that breaks the fourth wall.
  • Spoiler: Marissa remembers herself and doesn't spoil The Deuce.
  • Sustained Misunderstanding: When Lucca tells Adrian that Gary is an actor, they do a this for a little while. Every time she says something about Gary he thinks she's talking about Roland and vice versa.
