The One About the Recent Troubles

While Jay and Marissa are trying to film a documentary about the late Carl Reddick, his old secretary Cynthia starts to cry. She tells them Reddick pressured her into having sex with him for the fifteen years she worked for him. Diane finds blond hairs on Kurt's jacket. Maia has a tear in her cornea.

While the partners discuss what to do about Cynthia Cromley, it comes out that the current secretary Wendy was subjected to similar treatment by Mr. Reddick. Kurt reluctantly admits to going shooting with Eric and Don Jr. Trump, causing Diane to snap and defend the women who signed NDAs for Trump.

Liz learns that her father raped two female employees. She asks Marissa to find out if there are more. Lucca gets offered to take over the divorce department so they can fire the guy who has it now, since he's been accused of sexual harassment. Maia feels overlooked, and Marissa tells her to be more assertive.

Tropes

  • As the Good Book Says...: Liz says she always thought it unfair for God to hold generations responsible for the sins of the father, but she doesn't know who else he could blame.
  • Call-Back:
    • A season one episode was about Maia becoming more assertive. So is this episode.
    • Naomi Nivola, the reporter who quit law in part because she felt ignored by her male professors, shows up to talk to Cynthia about the sexual coercion.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: Julius understandably thinks Maia is crying because he just told her they were leaving her out of the website for the time being, but she is just sensitive to light that day.
  • It's Personal: The former porn star with the faulty NDA asks Diane why she want to help her now when she didn't in the previous season. Diane tells her it's personal now.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Diane declares to no one in particular that she is happy. Kurt chuckles and comments that she likes to narrate her own life.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Diane finds a loophole in Tara's NDA. Defied by Tara, who doesn't feel it entitles her to break it.
    • Jay and Adrian use the fact that Naomi thinks it Adrian who is being accused of sexual harassment to deny everything.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Black Panther is mentioned by Jason in the beginning, and then at the end Boseman does the Wakanda Forever salute while making fun of Jason.
    • Jason calls Reddick-Boseman "licensed to kill".
