Recap / The Goldbergs S 9 E 16 The Downtown Boys

Go To

A Plot: Barry and the JTP try to reclaim their youth by forming a boy band, but they quickly learn they aren't kids anymore.

B Plot: Adam has the keys to Erica's downtown apartment while she and Geoff are on their honeymoon, but realizes he's not cut out for city life. When he calls in Beverly for help, she ends up adapting far too well.

  • Cain and Abel: John Calabasis (who's running the "talent agency" that Barry goes to in the hopes of forming a boy band) turns out to have a step-brother named Gene Calabasis (who's acting as the "talent coach"), who needs the money to afford culinary school, yet is uncomfortable with John's Con Man ways and comes clean to the JTP about the scheme before they perform because he doesn't want them to embarrass themselves.
  • Calvinball: The episode starts with the JTP finding some younger kids hanging out in their old parking lot, and challenging them to a game of "Smashball", AKA smashing fruits with a bat. Despite the game being made up by the JTP and having no set rules, they still somehow lose, which leads to them trying to reclaim their youth.
  • Con Man: In addition to John Calabasis making another appearance, Adam and Dave Kim run into a couple on their way to Erica's apartment (namely a hobo that steals Dave's glasses and a guy that has them play Three-Card Monte), which leads to a scared Dave abandoning Adam and Adam having to call Beverly in for support.
  • Growing Up Sucks: The A Plot focuses on Barry and his friends having to deal with this.
  • Guest Star: Joey McIntyre, from New Kids on the Block, plays the role of Gene Calabasis.
  • Innocent Innuendo: Barry's proposal for a boy band name is "Men 4 Boyz", basing it on Boyz II Men with "double" the greatness, but the JTP point out that it has some...unfortunate implications.
  • Welcome to the Big City: Adam and Dave Kim decide to visit the streets of Philadelphia, but find themselves robbed by a homeless man, invited to a strip club (which horrifies them) and hustled at Three Card Monte. Adam calls Beverly to pick him up and take him home while she watches Erica's apartment. Then she goes out and has the exact opposite experience as Adam, enjoying the city life and making new friends.
  • Wild Teen Party: Played with, in that it's Beverly hosting a Bohemian party for adults in Erica's apartment while she's gone after adapting to city life.
