Recap / The Goldbergs S 5 E 18 MTV Spring Break

Go To

A Plot: Hoping to get the true spring break experience, Erica and Barry visit Pops in Florida.

B Plot: Adam gets a surprising reaction when he tells his parents the truth.

  • Bigfoot, Sasquatch, and Yeti: Adam asks to borrow his mother's new fur coat in order to fake a Bigfoot sighting and get on Ripley's Believe It Or Not.
  • Broken Pedestal: Beverly and Murray lose their position of power over Adam when he shows a surprising amount of responsibility and is still yelled at, and things get worse later when they lie about ruining his stuff and Adam realizes they're also Hypocrites. However, amends are made when his wallet-pilfering comes to light and the money is used to replace all of Adam's things (though he is, of course, still grounded).
  • Crocodile Tears: Erica and Barry manage to convince their parents to let them go to Florida by Barry crying over missing Pops, who is currently in Fort Lauderdale, and then Erica suggesting they save money by not "forcing" everyone else to come along.
  • Felony Misdemeanor: Pops ends up calling the police when "a party" (which turns out to be Erica and Barry having late-night fun by his building's pool) is keeping him up at night. One of the called cops threatens to start shooting when he mistakes a microwave going off for something dangerous.
  • From Bad to Worse: Geoff is surprised by Adam's Bigfoot costume (made of a mask and a borrowed expensive fur coat) and throws a slushie on it. And then the cleaning attempts end up torching and soaking it to ruin.
  • Growing Up Sucks: Erica and Barry are disappointed that their "cool" Pops has become a stereotypical boring Floridian old person. Even Pops himself is sad about it. He does end up making up for it, though, by stealing a grouchy neighbor's car keys and driving them to an MTV party.
  • Hypocrite: Adam does the "adult" thing and tells the truth about the coat immediately. But his parents continue yelling at him for it, causing him to lose respect for them. Later, after the parents accidentally break all of his stuff trying to find something incriminating and regain the position of power, they immediately lie to Adam about it.
  • Pretty in Mink: Beverly starts the episode wishing for one, and ecstatic when she receives it, even wearing it to the gym. However, it's ruined early into the episode, and by the end, she decides not to save for another after anti-fur protesters start throwing paint at people.
  • Properly Paranoid: After wrecking Adam's room, lying, and getting called out for it, they find out Adam has been doing something deceitful: pocketing spare money he collected (most of which is from his dad's wallet) and hiding it in the only thing they didn't break.
  • Saying Too Much: Beverly's lie about Adam's room being burgled is undone when she calls him a good, considerate boy that wants to buy batteries for his father, as "new batteries" was on a list of potential Father's Day gifts that was hidden in his destroyed property.
  • Wild Teen Party: Erica and Barry go to Pops' retirement village at Fort Lauderdale hoping to get to the MTV Spring Break party, only to find that the retirement village is too far from the beach. So they decide to break into the pool late at night and have their own party. Unfortunately, Pops calls the police on them, thinking they were hoodlums.
