Recap / The Goldbergs S 4 E 2 I Heart Video Dating

Go To

A Plot: Lainey, Erica and Beverly are in the mall when they are approached by John Calabasis, the owner of a video dating service, and are shocked when demo tape the owner shows is one that features Pops. Lainey thinks that video dating might be the best way to get her single father, Bill, back out there, while Beverly insists her skills at setting up couples is superior.

B Plot: Barry takes an assessment for career day, and the results show he should go into in accounting. Decidedly against that career choice, Barry sees Mr. Mellor hard at work with a class and thinks that being a gym teacher and coach is for him. Mr. Mellor is more than willing to mentor Barry, but it gets out of control and Murray tries to nip it in the bud.

  • Comically Missing the Point: When comparing their career assessments, Geoff brags that he qualified for an executive leadership position by following all of Evy's instructions on what bubbles to fill in, and then immediately defers to her while trying to boast about how it fits with his natural authoritative presence.
  • Con Artist: John Calabasis tells Erica and Lainey to sign up for video dating by stating that it's free, aside from a monthly fee that will last the rest of their lives. When Erica complains about Bill not getting any dates from it, he also points out that his service "Gurantees" a match rather than "Guarantees", purposely having a typo as a loophole if the service fails.
  • Failure Montage: After Bill gives up on video dating, Erica tries to record her own video to prove she can still find love, but goes through a series of outtakes where she can't help saying Geoff's name.
  • Flash In The Pan Fad: Barry has a habit of cycling through aspirations at a fast rate, so Murray isn't worried about his coaching dream...until he wakes up at 5 AM to jog with Coach Mellor. Murray manages to get him to switch tracks and want to become an oracle (immediately after Barry has just told the Coach how he'll never forget the joy of coaching) just by gifting him a plasma globe from a toy store, but when this makes Mellor feel like his life is pointless, Murray cheers him up by saying Barry's oracle phase will pass too but he'll always remember that Mellor truly cared about his future.
  • Like a Son to Me: Mr. Mellor ends up loving the idea of taking Barry on as his protégé, even calling himself a "gym-dad". He's disheartened and claims he's lost the only person that cared about his life when he loses Barry's attention due to Murray intervening.
  • Plot Parallel: Erica takes Bill's refusal to find a second soulmate to replace his wife as a parallel to her own inability to move on after losing Geoff.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Adam's idea for Bill's perfect dating video is a recreation of the music video for "Macho Man" by Village People, only realizing the implications when Erica destroys the tape.
    • Barry makes refences to Three's Company and Who's the Boss? in The Tag, when offering to give Bill an oracular reading of his future love life that ends up just being descriptions of the shows.
  • Tragic Keepsake: While recording his first video for the dating service, Bill breaks down and admit he wears one of his ex-wife's legwarmers on his arms because it's the last thing he has of her.
