Recap / The Goldbergs S 3 E 13 Double Dare

Go To

A Plot: Adam and Emmy Mirsky learn that their favorite game show, Double Dare, is coming to their school, and quickly pick each other as partners. However, when the time to audition actually comes, Adam arrives with Pops, leading the betrayed Emmy to partner with Adam's one-sided rival/enemy, "Handsome" Ben.

B Plot: Murray and Barry are upset by the Eagles' losing streak until Barry is convinced that, when Beverly is in the room, the Eagles score. Beverly starts watching the games with the boys, even asking Bill and Erica to teach her about the sport, but this leaves Murray annoyed because football is his time "away from his wife".

  • The Cameo: The real Benjamin "Handsome Ben" Bauman and Amy "Regular/Smart Amy" Gross (who, in the A Plot, becomes Ben's partner when Emmy is disqualified for making a mess while arguing with Adam) appear in the episode as the producers for Double Dare.
  • Culture Clash: In order to teach Beverly about football, Erica uses metaphors involving motherhood, like comparing the ball to a baby she needs to protect. Later, she uses football terms to help Murray understand Beverly's love of scrapbooking when he needs to apologize for forbidding Beverly from enjoying his hobby with him.
  • Good Luck Charm: Barry convinces himself that his mom is one.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: Murray's first attempt to make an apology scrapbook for Beverly looks absolutely nightmarish, with Erica comparing the cut-out lettering to a ransom note and wondering how he gave a photo demonic red eyes.
  • Hypocrite: Adam's betrayal is revealed first, and an upset Emmy partnering with Ben is claimed to be "retaliation" up until Ben reveals they had secretly been training together for months, before Adam had even asked to partner with her.
  • Moving the Goalposts: Because Murray values his "alone time", he tells Beverly she can't watch football with him until she learns appropriate football terminology. When she does, with help from Erica and Bill, he just flat-out refuses to let her join.
  • Never My Fault: Emmy considers Adam's betrayal worse than her own because, compared to his upfront but painful honesty, she was planning to lie about it and let him down easily. When Adam insults her for it, she pushes him into a slime pit; when he throws some slime at her in retaliation, she shoves him down into it further. And when this act is seen by the judges as an offense worth disqualifying her for, she also blames Adam for costing her a shot at fame. She only admits that she's been a jackass and a terrible best friend after Adam admits he couldn't compare to Ben.
