Recap / The Ghost And Molly Mc Gee S 2 E 30 The Grand Gesture

Go To

With Libby and Scratch backing her up, Molly tries to finally confess her feelings to Ollie, but she is just too tongue-tied— and none of her friends' elaborate attempts work. Meanwhile, June and Darryl inadvertently bring some of Scratch's ectoplasm to life after a science experiment gone wrong— and things get worse when it starts eating any electricity it can find.

Tropes

  • Balloon-Bursting Bird: Scratch is aggravated by a woodpecker, who was probably upset that he was hiding in its nest. While Scratch tries to hide from it behind the balloon display, the woodpecker pops the balloons, leading to the Signs of Disrepair gag described below.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: While trying to wrangle "Junior", Darryl and June start nagging it as if it were actually their son. Darryl even complains about turning into his parents when he realizes what he's doing.
  • Ear Ache: The sound of Junior's crying makes June cover her ears and give him back to Darryl.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Considering the sheer stress Molly and Ollie went through in their friendship and mutual feelings for each other, they more than deserved getting together after many pratfalls and dealing with Scratch's living ectoplasm this episode.
  • Energy Absorption: "Junior" is a Blob Monster made from Scratch's ectoplasm that starts absorbing all the electricity in Brighton, growing larger and larger. Once it absorbs enough, it shrinks back to its original size, only now it has gained sentience and the ability to speak. It says goodbye to Darryl and June and leaves to Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Parodied and deconstructed; Libby and Scratch try to help Molly ask Ollie out with a grandiose gesture (even getting a musical number about it), but all their efforts fail in some way. Molly eventually decides that sometimes it's better to just be straightforward with your feelings without dressing them up.
  • Official Couple: Thanks to Junior, Molly finally expresses her feelings to Ollie properly, and they promptly hold hands to confirm their couple status- which, surprisingly enough, restores all the electricity in Brighton.
  • Relationship Upgrade: Molly finally asks Ollie out and they even hold hands.
  • Shipper on Deck: Libby and Scratch do their darndest to help Molly give a grand confession to Ollie, and express their utmost joy at the end of the episode when they do become an item.
  • Shout-Out: Junior's nature as a gelatinous green ectoplasm creature made in a scientific experiment brings a spectral version of Flubber to mind.
    • Libby's begins the song with the lyrics "When your insides feels like spaghetti / and your palms are sweaty", bringing to mind the memetic lyric from "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.
  • Signs of Disrepair: Scratch and Libby set up a display of balloons spelling out the phrase "OLLIE WILL YOU BE MY BOYFRIEND?" Thanks to Scratch agitating a woodpecker, the display gets damaged so that it reads "OLLIE YOU FIEND".
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: The main plot has Molly having trouble asking Ollie to be her boyfriend (with Scratch and Libby helping out) and the b-plot has Darryl and June experiment with Scratch’s ectoplasm, ultimately resulting in the two creating a Blob Monster from it. Both plots come together when Molly and Ollie notice Junior roaming around Brighton and sucking all the electricity and Junior shrinks back to normal size (along with gaining intelligence) and makes a speech of how you don’t need some Grand Romantic Gesture to show someone you want to go out with him. This encourages the two to tell each other about their feelings, become an Official Couple and restore the power back to Brighton.
