Recap / The Flash 2014 S 7 E 17 Heart Of The Matter Part 1

Go To

Barry and Iris greet their future children, Nora and Bart, only for a shocking secret to threaten their new familial harmony. Meanwhile, the Godspeed war intensifies and threatens to destroy Central City.

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Explanation Extrication: Jay Garrick and Joan Williams being based on Earth Prime is perfectly in line with the Post-Crisis status quo from the comics. But unlike the comics, where it is explained how the history of Jay (and the other Golden Age heroes) was incorporated into the new Post-Crisis earth, no such explanation is provided on-screen here.
  • Alternate Self: It's established that this Nora is different from the one in Season 5. Notably, this one had a happy childhood, yet more mature and level-headed, as a result.
  • Alternate Timeline Ancestry: Jay Garrick and Joan Williams are confirmed to exist on Earth-Prime, which means they're now entirely different people than Barry's parents - officially confirming on-screen that were one of the survivors of the original multiverse transplanted to Earth Prime as a result of Crisis.note
  • Always a Child to Parent: Barry & Iris ground Bart & Nora after deciding the Godspeeds are too dangerous to put their children at risk; when the kids try to argue that they can’t be expected to just sit around at Grandpa Joe’s, Barry immediately points out that the alternative is that they’re locked up in the pipeline.
  • Arch-Enemy: Bart specifically compares the dynamic Thawne and Barry have to himself and Godspeed.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In the intro scene, Bart saves his sister from Heart.
    • Cisco marks his return by saving Nora, Jay and Barry from a bunch of Godspeeds.
  • Big Eater: Being speedsters, Nora and Bart consume a ton of food.
  • Birds of a Feather: Chester and Bart immediately geek out together, to Nora's annoyance.
  • Burping Contest: Nora and Bart have one while eating Chinese food.
  • The Bus Came Back:
  • Continuity Nod: Cisco mentions that Diggle filled him in on the current events.
  • Enemy Mine: Once the waring Godspeeds see Bart, they immediately drop hostilities and go after "The Adversary" together.
  • Fatal Flaw: Godspeed calls Bart's inability to suppress his rash nature this.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The new Nora is a lot less impulsive and more reasonable, while Bart is extremely reckless.
  • Gosh Dang It to Heck!: As they face down the Godspeeds, Jay tells Barry, "I say we give 'em heck, Flash!" (In fairness, they are inside a church at the time.)
  • A God Am I: August Heart obviously regards himself as this.
  • He's Back!: Jay Garrick has managed to get his speed back, presumably due to the rebirth of the Speed Force, and suits up as the Flash once again to help Barry.
  • Honorary Uncle: Jay Garrick is this to the Allen children in the future, with Bart referring to him as Uncle Jay.
  • I Have Your Wife: The Godspeeds take Jay hostage in order to draw Bart out.
  • Internal Reveal: Allegra tells Chester about her cousin being dead, after being unable to keep a straight face about it.
  • It's All My Fault: Allegra feels terrible about her powers not working probably due to her personal situation.
  • It's Personal: Bart describes Godspeed as his Thawne, the reason being that in the future Godspeed killed Jay Garrick in front of him who served as a mentor to Bart.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: With Cecile's help, Barry enters August Heart's mind at the end of the episode.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By charging the S.E.E. battery with his lightning, Barry unwittingly also gave the Godspeeds a boost.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently Team Flash once took on Time Trapper, a Legion of Super-Heroes villain, though he has yet to appear on-screen.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Allegra calls Chester "Chester" when they're usually not on a First-Name Basis. Her powers also emit Ultraviolet waves, which they only do when she is in a state of distress.
  • Person as Verb: Deconstructed. Barry is initially annoyed that Bart is using “Thawne” as a catch-all term for Arch-Enemy, until Bart explains that Godspeed was responsible for a similar tragedy to him compared to what Thawne did to Barry.
  • Retcon: Due to a variety of changes in the timelinenote  the future has been changed drastically since Nora last appeared in the present day. Barry is alive to see his children grow up and Nora is no longer an only child, whilst ARGUS is no longer detaining metas simply for existing, allowing Barry's kids to be superheroes out in the open.
  • Rogues' Gallery Transplant: Pre-Crisis Godspeed served as Nora's Starter Villain as XS while Post-Crisis Godspeed has become Bart's Arch-Enemy.
  • Shout-Out: Chester calls Nora and Bart "a couple of Marty McFlys."
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Actually (partially) justified. Wally is mentioned as being deep in meditation, dealing with some kind of disturbance on the psychic plane.
  • The Unreveal: It's still not explained why Iris is phasing in and out of the timeline. Nora and Bart clearly know what's causing it, but they don't reveal it either.
