Recap / The Dukes Of Hazzard S 3 E 6 Uncle Boss

Go To

In what was intended to be the "first" episode involving Hughie Hogg, Boss' nephew comes up with a dastardly plan to frame the Duke boys once and for all: Have two guys pose as Bo and Luke, rob Hazzard Bank and capture everything on video.

Tropes present in this episode:

  • Always Someone Better: Filmed in the spring of 1979 for airing early in Season 2, this episode was intended to be the first aired appearance of the Hughie Hogg character. The idea behind the character was a more focused, intelligent and determined criminal who more than capable of assisting his uncle in successfully framing the Duke boys and helping him seize longtime enemy Jesse Duke's farm. Hughie's plots were said to be more foolproof than Boss', but much like his uncle, ultimately he would be foiled either by Bo and Luke figuring things out or Hughie's own undoing.
  • Criminal Doppelgänger: Boss uses his favorite scheme – having two men pose as Bo and Luke while conspiring to rob his own Hazzard Bank – and hopes to capture the incident on video (via a hidden camera).
  • Technology Marches On: In 1980, video cassette recorders were cutting-edge technology, as several minutes are spent having Hughie explain how VCRs work to Boss and Rosco – this, since Boss and Hughie taking the security tape to the FBI (as evidence the Duke boys robbed Hazzard Bank) – is a major part of the plot. Quite possibly, given the backwards, simple life of Hazzard, this was the first VCR in Hazzard County ... and the only one for several years. Today, VCRs are Thrift Store Tech; the footage would be stored on a DVD or, even more recently, a hard drive.
    • Additionally, Boss and Hughie having to deliver (in person) the tape to the FBI would be unnecessary today, given online technology that simply would allow Boss to send the tape via the internet – in other words, he'd be able to pull off his bank robbery scheme with the fake Bo and Luke without either the real Bo or Luke having any idea what's going on until federal agents come to the Duke farm. Boss would be able to benefit from modern, 2010s technology vs. 1980 technology.
