Chapter 73: Day at the Races

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Amusing Injuries: In typical Augustin fashion, his rough landing on Berk ends with his head slammed through a wall.
  • Calvinball: Berk Dragon Racing seems to have shades of this, which makes sense since the sport is fairly new. Despite the fact that they only show up at the end of a week's worth of racing, Hiccup and the Madrigal riders are allowed to participate in the ending race because Stoick lets them. At the end of the race, the Black Sheep is launched and after the various riders try and fail to win with it, it ends up in Antonio's lap in the bleachers. Despite not being a racer himself, Antonio wins the championship because he managed to run the black sheep to the goal.
Antonio was now Berk's dragon racing champion, for the next year.
It was unexpected, unaccounted for, and it probably broke a few rules.
Just how the Berkians liked it.
  • Culture Clash: Stoick and Alma devolve into an argument on where Hiccup and Mirabel's wedding will be held, what constitutes a "traditional wedding" being wildly different to each of them.
Stoick: I heavily doubt the Encanto is suitable for the traditional wedding feast, or the ceremonial potato-sack race. Berk brews the best bridal ale in the archipelago, for Thor's sake!
Alma: Perhaps, but how exactly are we supposed to perform the candle lighting ceremony here? Or the Carnavalito celebration? You don't even have a church!
Stoick: You can't have a Berkian wedding if it's not on Berk!
Alma: This isn't a Berkian wedding...
  • God Guise: After stubbing her toe and generating a small cloud, Berkians immediately thought that Pepa was an incarnation of Thor.
  • Shout-Out: When Antonio gets his hands on the black sheep, Gobber has this to say:
