Chapter 60: A Vast Mistake

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Cloudcuckoolander: When Camilo asks why the whole island is missing, the twins ignore his question and start doing armpit farts.
Isabela: ...Why are they like this?
  • Heroic Sacrifice: As in canon, Stoick and Gobber are willing to draw the Red Death away from the others, fully knowing that they'll likely be killed.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: Apparently the twin's parents would leave at random for weeks at a time to get away from them.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Even though he has Hiccup, Toothless, and the Dragon Riders (not to mention the magical gifts of the Madrigals) willing to fight the Queen, Stoick still leads all of Berk's Vikings into battle against her without bringing the kids not wanting to see Hiccup killed after they've finally repaired their relationship.
  • Irony: It isn't lost on Stoick the irony that it's only after he no longer hates all dragons does he find the nest.
  • It's Quiet… Too Quiet: Hiccup and the Madrigals first notice how quiet it is before they realize that the village had been emptied out.
  • That Sounds Familiar: When Hiccup tells the Madrigal his heart-to-heart with Stoick, Mirabel remarks that it sounds familiar.
  • Too Dumb to Live: In spite of all of the warnings, Stoick makes sure that the whole village leaves to the Nest without the Dragon Riders — their trump card and only hope in facing the Red Death — out of a misguided attempt at keeping Hiccup out of danger. Gobber calls him out on this.
