Chapter 52: Hometown Hijinks

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Stoick still doesn't quite seem to understand what he's doing wrong with Hiccup, Gobber gives him one.
Stoick: I don’t get it! I try to understand what he’s feeling! I apologize to him! I offer to kill the Night Fury with him, and then I tell the people to leave the Night Fury alone! But he’s still like… THIS!
Gobber: Have ye tried talking to him?
Stoick: YES! It didn’t work, obviously!
Gobber: Let me try that again… Have ye tried listening to him?
  • Easily Forgiven: Averted twice.
    • Even weeks after the Vikings' arrival in the Encanto, Mirabel is still not on speaking terms with Astrid. When Astrid gives a sincere apology for her attempt to lure Hiccup to Berk by kidnapping her, Mirabel responds that she does not forgive her. However, she admits that she might be able to.
    • Despite knowing that he's legitimately sorry for what he's done, Hiccup is still pretty upset with Stoick, and won't even talk to him.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Stoick ignorantly expects Hiccup to simply go back to their old father-son dynamic, by having his son sleep in his old room instead of with the Madrigals in the Great Hall. This is in spite of the fact Hiccup has made it clear beforehand that he still resents Stoick for his abusive treatment, and sleeping in his old room would only stir up bad memories. Unsurprisingly, Hiccup furiously rejects his father’s expectations.
  • Lethal Chef: When the Madrigals try Berk's "tough and tasteless" cuisine, they immediately break into hysterics about how inedible it is. Even Hiccup complains, having spent a year subsisting on Julieta's cooking.
Isabela: Does this even qualify as food?
Mirabel: It's a crime. It's a crime in the form of a chicken leg.
    Luisa: I miss m-mooom...
Camilo: How do you live like this? DO YOU PEOPLE NOT KNOW WHAT SALT IS!?
Hiccup: Toothless please... Toothless you gotta take me back! I can't do this, not again! Toothless please!
  • Jerkass at Your Discretion: While the Vikings all try to pretend that they value having Hiccup there, they all are clearly putting on a facade, ready for him to leave as soon as he ends the war for them.
Vikings weren't as sneaky as they thought they were.
  • Reverse Psychology: Hiccup manages to get Snotlout to join dragon training by appealing to his fragile ego, pointing how everyone telling him how "awesome" he is, that the only way Snotlout would be able to co-opt some of that good reputation is by becoming a part of his dragon riding team and that only a real Viking would be able to tame a dragon.
