Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 4 E 10 Pink Pills And Purple Parents

Go To

When Buddy offers Sally some of his medication to treat her headache, Rob tells them about the consequences when Laura once took some of Millie's tranquilizers to cope with her first meeting with Rob's parents.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: Don't take other people's medication; it may have different effects on you.
  • Intoxication Ensues: Laura takes some of Millie's tranquilizers to deal with her nerves about meeting her in-laws, and swallows more during the dinner. She grows increasingly loopy, beginning with mixing up the beginning consonants in "carrots and peas" and finishing with a dance number and then passing out.
  • Meet the In-Laws: An odd case in that Rob didn't take Laura home to meet his parents before marrying her. Laura's nerves about the experience lead her to take Millie's tranquilizers, and Hilarity Ensues.
  • Obnoxious In-Laws: Mrs. Petrie observes her son's new wife very critically. However, when someone asks Rob how everything turned out, Rob answers that actually, the incident helped Laura's relationship with her in-laws once they heard the explanation; they were flattered that she had worried so much about making a good impression.
  • Spoonerism: One of Laura's first symptoms is mixing up the letters in "carrots and peas."
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the episode is Rob recounting Laura's tranquilizer-infused attempt to cope with meeting his parents to explain to Sally why she shouldn't take Buddy's medication.
