Recap / The Dick Van Dyke Show S 1 E 2 My Blonde Haired Brunette

Go To

Rob doing a series of accidentally offensive things on his morning off results in a spat between him and Laura. As Rob talks with Buddy and Sally, trying to figure out what he did wrong, Laura and Millie plan how Laura can recapture her husband's attention, which leads to a disastrous hair-bleaching incident.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: A non-creepy example; Laura, who has begun preparing breakfast, decides to wake Rob up with a kiss. It kick-starts her insecurity when Rob (who's having too much fun sleeping in) asks her not to do it. Given that he used to love it, it makes her fear that Rob no longer feels attracted to her.
  • The Exit Is That Way: When Rob and Laura begin having a heart-felt conversation, Millie interrupts for a second. Rob gives her a tranquil Death Glare, and she hastily flees the room...right into the hall closet.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Rob just wants to relax on his day off, and he doesn't consider that telling Laura not to wake him or wearing grungy clothes might make her feel taken for granted.
  • Makeover Fail: Laura's friend Millie suggests that bleaching her hair would bring a spark back to her and Rob's relationship. Laura accedes to it, but doesn't like the result, though Millie thinks she looks good. Just then, Rob calls home from work and Laura, suspecting that he's on to something, asks him what he would think if she bleached her hair. He responds negatively. Rob insists on coming home early, having gotten the idea to take Laura out to dinner in order to make up for paying less attention to her. Laura and Millie then scramble to dye Laura's hair back; when Rob comes home, he finds Laura with her hair half brown, half blonde.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Rob accidentally starts the entire plot by telling Laura not to kiss him (in context, he wants to sleep in, but it kicks off Laura's hurt feelings).
    • Millie accidentally makes the problem even worse by suggesting that Laura bleach her hair, which spirals into worse consequences.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When he calls Laura to set up a romantic evening, Rob sings a snippet clearly based on "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair." (It panics Laura, who's already bleached her hair.)
    • Laura bleaches her hair blonde, then tries to dye it back to its original brown. When her husband interrupts her, she comes out half blonde and half brunette. Since the show was filmed in black-and-white, she resembles Cruella De Vil, who debuted earlier in the same year the episode aired.
    • While talking on the phone after Laura “hypothetically” asks what he’d think if she were blonde, Rob notes she’d look like Harpo Marx. Laura’s horrified to realize he’s right.
  • Slasher Smile: When Rob comes into the office brooding, Sally correctly guesses that he and Laura had a fight. The writers discuss what might have gone wrong. Buddy suggests that maybe Laura's jealous.
Rob: No, Laura doesn't cry when she's jealous; she just sits there and smiles.
    Buddy: She smiles?
Rob: Yeah, like this. (bares teeth with slightly crazed eyes)
  • Speak in Unison: Rob and Buddy speak together in a sarcastic tone when they mimic their wives' refusal to tell them what's wrong if they don't know already.
  • You Know What You Did: Or rather, "you should know what you did". When Rob finally recognizes that Laura is upset and asks what he did wrong, she refuses to answer. Apparently Buddy has also suffered this with Pickles.
