Carrie wakes up after spending all night near death at the hospital, where her mother Jessica tells her she slit her wrists and nearly bled to death, but was saved by Lucy. Carrie explains that she was overwhelmed with guilt at being a white person after studying American history on the internet, so Jessica gives Carrie a pep talk to begin rebuilding her self-esteem. Carrie now realizes that suicide was never a good solution for her situation, because it would have allowed evil to win.

A few hours later, Debbie arrives. Carrie apologizes for her blunder, and Debbie relates a lesson her own mother had just taught her.

Later still, Sandy, Debbie's mother, has a brief talk with Lucy before Carrie arrives because she is about to be released from the hospital. Lucy, despite being black and Carrie white, affirms that at Carrie's birth Lucy "didn't see a white baby. I saw my beautiful daughter....and you remain my beautiful daughter still, and forever."

  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Husband made the episode in reference to his cousin Jim Williams, who had died by suicide over a decade earlier.
