Recap / The Bridge: Humanity's Stand Ch 18 Not As It Seems

Go To

The GDF leads a raid on a Red Dawn base, a former Soviet base built into a mountain. The operatives inside mostly panic as artillery bombards the base and destroys the gates. A member named Ravi gives orders for reinforcements. She retrieves a special helmet from a safe that boosts telepathic abilities. She dons it and scans the area. She senses that the GDF forces are protected by an even more skilled telepath, so she cannot interfere with their minds, so she instead contacts Lady Adeline. Adeline is pissed and reports that Red Dawn bases all around the world are being attacked simultaneously. Ravi declares everyone in her base will destroy the magical artifacts in their possession to prevent them from falling into enemy hands and then fight to the last man. However, Adeline says she has a better idea and tells Ravi her plan.

Ravi joins the battle and defeats a few robot drones with her telekinesis. She orders her soldiers to escape while she holds the GDF off as long as she can. She privately thinks Adeline's plan is crazy, but her Lady's word is law. She adjusts her own memories so that a telepath will be unable to discover her conversation with Adeline and Adeline's plan so easily. She faces a hulking, armored soldier and is able to stun him by redirecting grenades. Exhausted from her efforts, her men carry her into the vault where they store their magical artifacts. Ravi sees how scared her men are and asks when it all went wrong. Red Dawn has the noble cause of saving the planet from the plague of humanity, yet the GDF is defeating them so easily. When they learned of Dimension Tide taking away six of the Kaiju, they expected the Defenders to turn on humanity, yet the Defenders continue to work with the GDF. It doesn't make any sense.

Ravi orders her men to take their guns and whatever artifacts can be used as weapons and make a last stand. Suddenly, a GDF soldier breaks down the door. Ravi's men open fire, but the man easily knocks them all unconscious with telekinesis. Ravi is shocked that he didn't kill them, and he says the GDF doesn't take killing lightly, and besides, they need information, so prisoners are more useful than corpses. Ravi senses she doesn't stand a chance against him and surrenders on the condition that her captured men are not harmed. He ties her up and uses his telepathy to make her fall asleep, remarking that her concern for her men proves she isn't irredeemable.

The soldier, John Shepard, calls that it's all clear and his sister Jane, Ramirez, and Master Sergeant Chief walk in. The siblings bicker for a bit before getting down to business. Jane complains about the advanced weaponry Red Dawn packs and blames Hannibal Chou. The group then questions how Red Dawn has so many telepaths and telekinetics in its ranks, since the UN was supposed to keep track of family lines with unusual powers.

Tendo Choi, the GDF's Chief of Staff, is feeling bogged down by his responsibilities. It's his job to manage everyone's schedules and coordinate battles. He thinks back to the last few weeks, with Godzilla, Xenilla, and the others getting taken away by Dimension Tide, Dimension Tide getting hacked and fired eight times, then Taiyou's group infiltrating the Shatterdome and packing advanced camouflage technology. They still don't know where they are getting it and who hacked the satellite. He gets a video phone call from Stenz, who expresses his concerns about Tytanna. Tendo assures that Tytanna is a friend. Stenz is worried that she will face discrimination by those who dislike unusual people and may snap and hurt someone, but Tendo says he's overthinking this. As the call ends, Tendo tries to contact Pentecost and asks the AI Gladness where he is. Gladness trolls him by using Exact Words. She first says she cannot locate him because he is beyond the range of her scanners, then eventually explains that he's on board the Langoud in the dock, which blocks his signal.

Azusa Aoki nee Gojo walks up and asks to speak to Pentecost, saying she had had an interesting revelation the other day. Tendo explains where he had gone and says she should be able to board the Langoud easily. General Aso calls, asking to speak to Pentecost. Annoyed, Tendo again explains where he is. Aso says he's coming over to reveal to Pentecost his secret weapon. Azusa knows what he is talking about. Tendo asks what it is, but the two say it is best that as little people as possible know. As the call ends and Azusa walks away, Tendo slumps in his chair, annoyed.
