Tropes present in this episode:

  • Precision F-Strike: The mild profanity "hell" makes it past the censors – and this was on a situation comedy, much less a family sitcom, that aired during the "Family Hour" in early 1970, a full year before All in the Family debuted, where hells, damns and stronger words were uttered regularly. The scene in question is where Mike comes home, walks in the living room and sees the kids, Alice and Carol dressed up and the entire editorial board of the Daily Chronicle assembled for the newspaper's "Father of the Year" contest. Mike laughs and – not knowing what's going on – asks, "The hell's going on here?" (Most likely, the intended line was "What's going on here?") This was likely one of the earliest instances of a sitcom, much less a family sitcom, where someone uttered profanity on the air.
    • Wordof God says it's "What the devil's going on here?"
  • You Are Grounded!: Marcia is excluded (surprisingly, rather harshly and cruelly) from an anticipated family ski trip after she refuses to explain why she snuck out of the house late at night to mail a letter. note
