Recap / The Boondocks - S3 E4: "The Story of Jimmy Rebel"

Go To

"The Story of Jimmy Rebel" is the 4th episode of the 3rd season of The Boondocks.

Uncle Ruckus wants to meet his idol musician Jimmy Rebel, a Confederate sympathizer and white supremacist who performs concerts singing songs that embrace white supremacy and condemns minorities (especially blacks). Ruckus then tries to spend as much time with Rebel as possible without having to explain that he's Ruckus.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Mostly focuses on Uncle Ruckus and a new character (Jimmy). Huey and Riley only make quick cameos.
  • Dreadful Musician: Jimmy Rebel is this to Robert because of the racial slurs in both the former's songs' lyrics and names.
  • Maintain the Lie: Uncle Ruckus lies to Jimmy Rebel on a constant basis, and each time Ruckus lies, he has to come up with another lie to keep Rebel onboard and ensure he doesn't just go home.
  • Noble Bigot: Jimmy Rebel is (sort of) portrayed as one, being able to see past Uncle Ruckus' race
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Jimmy Rebel is based off of Johnny Rebel, a white supremacist songwriter in real life (though he did later claim he only wrote those songs for the money).
  • Rage Breaking Point: Robert has one when Jimmy keeps giving him autographed copies of his music CDs that cry for the genocidal extermination of all black people painting them as molesters, drug abusers, government welfare exploiters and lazy bums.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When realizing just how caring and compassionate Jimmy Rebel turned out to be towards him, Uncle Ruckus accuses Jimmy for not being racist to black people, and runs off in tears. Jimmy hurries back to Ruckus, assuring the latter that he still does hate blacks but wants to make Ruckus an exception because Ruckus is more than willing to throw his own race into genocide. Ruckus apologizes for his behavior and makes amends to preserve their friendship by settling on singing hate songs about Mexicans.
  • Snowball Lie: Uncle Ruckus starts one by telling Jimmy that he's not Ruckus, he's Toby.
  • Start My Own: Uncle Ruckus vows to start making his own racist country songs simply out of spite after Robert lashed out at him not do so.

"One Good Nigger"

Jimmy Rebel is a racist country singer whose songs are mostly about hatred of black people. However, he makes friends with his self-proclaimed biggest fan, Uncle Ruckus, considering him better than other black people. Not only does he write a song called "One Good Nigger" as a tribute to him, he invites him to become his musical collaborator. Unfortunately, Jimmy's fans are even more racist than he is, and so they hate Ruckus on principle.
