Go To

When a virus erupts during a KFC special, the Freemans and Jazmine have to survive in the post-apocalyptic world, but Granddad and Riley invite friends over.

Episode Tropes:

  • Big Damn Heroes: When the Fried Chicken Flu militia attacks the Freeman-DuBois family over supplies, Thugnificent and Leonard save them by ramming the militia's bus off the road with their UPS truck.
  • Crazy Survivalist: Both Huey and President Obama, the latter of whom is better off due to having more resources and also less people to share them with. Huey made his survival kit and guide specifically for his family, only to compromise when Tom's family, and Thugnificent and Leonard get involved.
  • Expy:
  • Friendship Moment: Huey agreeing to modify his survival plan to let Jazmine stay with his family when things go bad. Later, he lets Tom and Sarah into the house, potentially compromising his revised plan, solely because Jazmine begs him to.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: The new recipe for Kernel's Fried Chicken, to the point there are riots over shortage of chicken in its locations. Even when the reported "mystery virus" seems to be connected to the chicken, people are willing to risk their very lives to get it.
  • Literal-Minded: Leonard thought buffalo wings are really made of buffalo, rather than chicken dipped in hot sauce named after Buffalo, New York where they were invented. Tom gets sick and Leonard is kicked out.
  • Parents in Distress: Jazmine wails for Tom and Sarah to be let into the house against Huey's intention to bar out all outsiders to maintain their food and water supply as it is. Huey decides to let them in so she stops crying, but tells Jazmine they aren't allowed to eat anything.
  • Reality Subtext:
    • This episode satirizes an actual moment in KFC history when Oprah gave out coupons for grilled chicken, which led to a shortage and riots. note
    • Also, the Fried Chicken Flu epidemic also satirizes the swine flu outbreak that happened in 2009.
  • The Reveal: At the end, it turns out the flu pandemic was a nationwide case of salmonella from the chicken. Even with the supposed millions of people affected, no one has actually died. What's more, many others are unaware of the news due to power outages.
  • Sequential Symptom Syndrome: When Jazmine asks Huey how to tell if someone has the Fried Chicken Flu, Tom sitting behind them goes through every symptom as he lists them.
Huey: Well, it normally starts with a temperature, and excessive sweating. <Tom pulls on his collar uncomfortably as sweat beads on his face> After that, tremendous stomach pains, <Tom clutches his stomach> headaches, <Tom grabs his head> loss of balance. <Tom topples off the couch> As mucus builds up, they'll begin to have an incredible amount of snot. <Tom pulls out a handkerchief and messily blows his nose> After that, the inevitable projectile vomiting. <puke erupts from Tom's mouth as Jazmine and Huey finally turn around and notice, causing Jazmine to scream>
  • Serious Business: Due to the fact that multiple chicken restaurants ran out of chicken was the reason for the episode's riots, it must be some good chicken.
Citizen: How can they be out of chicken?! It's Kernel's Fried Chicken!
  • Shout-Out:
    • The climax at the end is a parody of the Mad Max movies.
    • To Kentucky's Fried Chicken (Kernel's Fried Chicken), Popeye's (Bluto's), Church's Chicken (Temple's) and Chick-fil-a (Chick-le-fait).
  • Skewed Priorities: Riley is never concerned that civilization appears to be going to Hell, only that he didn't get to try KFC's new recipe.
Riley: The real tragedy is that we may never get to eat fried chicken again.
  • Slept Through the Apocalypse: When Huey laments the fact that there's not enough food to feed the nine people in the Freeman house, Uncle Ruckus suddenly appears out of nowhere, much to the confusion of everyone. Ruckus then reveals that he was in the attic replacing the insulation and got knocked out when he hit his head after the generator exploded earlier in the episode. Which leads to him having no knowledge of the pandemic currently underway.
