Recap / The Blacklist S 7 E 15 Gordon Kemp

Go To

When a chance of fate leads Red to witness the shooting of an 18 year-old girl, he seeks the task force's help in taking down the gun manufacturer he holds responsible.

This episode shows examples of...

  • Asshole Victim: Gordon Kemp has zero concern for anyone but himself, happily selling guns on the cheap to people who are obviously going to commit crimes or sell them to others who will. He leaks manufactured and biased information to make an innocent teenager killed by said guns out to be a gang member all while gleefully telling Keene and Ressler that rather than stopping he's going to increase production as he sees sales going up in response to public shootings.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Red himself sells guns but holds Gordon with the utmost contempt for allowing street criminals easy access to cheap guns with no regard for the innocents who killed as a result. Ressler even states that Reddington only sells weapons meant for military purposes, even if they're armed insurrections.
  • Impossible Task: Red seemingly sets himself and the task force on one of these when going after Kemp as they have to operate within the law to bring him down. Eventually after exhausting every legal avenue and even failing to steal a shipment from Kemp, Red decides to just 'fuck it' and shoots the Jerkass.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After spending the entire episode coaxing by on his good publicity and abusing technicalities in the law to protect himself, Gordon Kemp is murdered by Red using one of his own guns which the latter just brought off the street an hour before.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Gordon Kemp manages to keep himself from being punished for his crimes thanks to effective Implausible Deniability, leaking misinformation that makes himself look good and his victims bad, and relying on the fake few would risk their careers going after a gun manufacturer due to political controversy.
  • Tranquil Fury: Red spends the episode acting as his usual self while he and the task force tries to take Kemp down, but there are moments
  • Villain with Good Publicity:
