Recap / The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! S2 E19 "Emperor Stark"

Go To

What should have been a mere 30 days for Tony's auto-repair system to restore the Vision turns into something far worse — Tony pushes for the removal of all forms of A.I. after the Ultron fiasco, then moves on to seize control of the world, by force in some cases, and the Vision wakes up to a dystopian world, realizing that being an A.I. himself may have spared him. And it only took 30 days.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Aiming Skills: Hawkeye was aiming for the Purple Man's satellite, but his fight with a mind controlled Ms. Marvel caused him to fire at a nearby Iron Man drone, reflecting to another before hitting said satellite.
  • And I Must Scream: While most of the Purple Man's victims aren't aware that they're being controlled, Tony is. Throughout the episode, he's visibly trying to resist the Purple Man as he's ordered to kill his friends, but only ever manages to freeze in place for a few seconds.
Purple Man: Look at him, Stark. I want you to feel this. I want you to know exactly what I'm making you do.
    Tony: (strained) Cap?
Purple Man: You're MINE, Stark! Forever! No matter how hard you resist, you'll never be free. The most you'll be able to do is wiggle your finger when I'm next to you.
  • Asleep for Days: Vision is put into stasis for 30 days to recover from his injuries.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Captain America believes this in the case of Iron Man under the Purple Man's control. (The clues being Vision not being completely shut down, Tony sending Cap to the mansion just in time for Vision's awakening, and Jarvis not being entirely offline.)
  • Ironic Echo: Purple Man boasts that all Tony will ever be able to do is wiggle his finger while under his influence. Cut to the climax when the heroes are free of his control:
Iron Man: I can do a lot with my finger. (flick)
  • Mind-Control Eyes: When someone is under the control of the Purple Man, their eyes turn purple, and return to normal color when they break free of his control.
  • Oh, Crap!: Purple Man finds himself surrounded by Cap, Iron Man and Vision, followed by the arrival of a very angry Thor, all being freed from his control.
    Purple Man: Uh-oh.
  • Phlebotinum-Proof Robot: Thanks to Stark's satellite, Purple Man can control the minds of everyone on Earth, but Vision and Jarvis are both immune once reactivated.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Killgrave has purple skin and has the power to influence anyone to do his bidding through sheer will alone, which grows stronger the closer he is to a target. He makes Tony build a satellite that somehow spreads his influence all over the world and the victims' eyes are changed to purple. The purple energy around Stark Tower emphasizes the power he has.
  • Tempting Fate: Hawkeye lambasts Vision for doing this after a fight.
Vision: That was of minimal difficulty.
Hawkeye: Did you just say this was easy? You never say it was easy, EVER!
    Vision: Why?
    (A brainwashed Thor appears)
Thor: Your end has come, betrayers!
    Hawkeye: That's why.
  • Time Skip: see Asleep for Days.
  • Villain Has a Point: Tony admits that Killgraves' plot was based on his ideas to make the world a better place, so he takes full responsibility for it. Cap assures that he was Fighting from the Inside, and is positive that everyone else is aware of the Purple Man controlling them.
  • Voice of the Legion: After Jarvis is uploaded into Vision they spend most of the episode speaking like this, though they can both still speak independently.
