An East German assassin is targeting U.S, scientists. As it happens, Claudia orders Elizabeth and Philip to stop him. They put a bomb in a car of one of them, and make it so it can be easily discovered. Unfortunately, while Philip and Elizabeth manage to subdue the assassin, he manages to kill a scientist and three of the agents protecting him with one of his own bombs, which makes both sides disconsolate.
As if that wasn't enough for Philip, Claudia tells Elizabeth he slept with Irina, even though he claimed he didn't, and Elizabeth believes they didn't do their job properly because she was letting that weigh on her mind, so she tells Philip they should stick to doing the job, instead of their marriage.
This episode contains examples of:
- Batman Gambit: Elizabeth and Philip plant a bomb in the car of one of the scientists, and make it easy to find, in order to get the FBI to protect the scientists. While it has the desired effect - the FBI does end up putting more agents in to protect the scientists - it doesn't stop the assassin.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: A Gender Flipped version; Chris used to go out with Martha and is still hung up on her, as he comes up behind her when she's looking at files, and he's waiting outside her home when she comes home. This becomes important later.
- Continuity Nod: Elizabeth still doesn't trust Claudia at first when she tells the news about Philip and Irina.
- Enemy Mine: The Batman Gambit (above) gets the FBI hunting for the assassin as well as the KGB. Both sides want to prevent the assassinations, although they go about it separately.
- Hoist by Their Own Petard: Elizabeth ends up killing the assassin with the same explosive device he tried to kill her with by throwing it into the room he's in.
- Honey Trap: A prostitute the assassin meets at a bar becomes one for one of the FBI agents so the assassin can plan explosives in one of his radios.
- Shout-Out: The assassin is watching The Fall Guy in his hotel room when Elizabeth and Philip confront him.note
- The Cure's "Siamese Twins" plays when Chris is staking out the building where Martha lives.
