Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 26 Morticia The Breadwinner

Go To

Morticia, mistakenly believing that Gomez is financially ruined, secretly rallies the rest of the family to figure out ways to earn money.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Counterfeit Cash: Uncle Fester says he knows an easy way to make money: print it. He abandons this plan when Morticia tells him that it's illegal.
  • Everything Sounds Sexier in French: At one point, Morticia knocks at the door of the library, where Gomez has been on the phone with Mr. Blooker, his broker.
    Gomez: Entrez! Entrez!
    [Morticia enters.]
Gomez: Oh, Tish! Even when I speak French, it drives me wild!
[He gives her a Kiss Up the Arm.]
  • Lemonade Stand Plot: Wednesday and Pugsley set up a sidewalk stand, complete with a sign that says "Henbane on the Rocks". A man buys some, thinking "Henbane on the Rocks" is just a trade name.
Man: Boy, those trade names get wackier every day. Let me have a tall one, son.
    Pugsley: Yes, sir.
[The man gives them a quarter. Pugsley ladles some henbane into a tankard and hands it to him.]
Man: Well, always like to help out the small-business man. Cheers!
    Pugsley: Cheers!
[The man takes a sip, then chokes as steam shoots out of his ears.]
Wednesday: Would you like some more?
Man: [gasping] I'd like some help! I'm gonna tell my lawyer about this.
Pugsley: [to Wednesday] See? Satisfied customers always tell their friends.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: Gomez is trying to buy his own railroad as a surprise for Morticia. Uncle Fester and Morticia, already in a panic after reading a newspaper story about a stock-market tumble, overhear Gomez on the phone with Mr. Blooker, who is trying to warn him that people have gone broke speculating on railroads. Hearing Gomez echo the words "broke", "penniless", and "wiped out", they think that Gomez is financially ruined.
Gomez: Blooker, I know fortunes have been lost speculating on railroads, but what's a fortune?
Mr. Blooker: But, Mr. Addams, the people I'm talking about went broke!
    Gomez: Broke?
Mr. Blooker: They're absolutely penniless, wiped out!
Gomez: That's incredible, Blooker, incredible! Broke, you say?
[Morticia and Uncle Fester are standing at the closed door of the library, listening.]
Gomez: Penniless? Wiped out? Ghastly, absolutely ghastly!
Morticia: Uncle Fester, this is shocking!
Uncle Fester: It's worse than I thought!
Morticia: Oh, the poor, poor dear!
Uncle Fester: "Poor thing" is right! They wiped him out like a greasy skillet.
