Recap / The Addams Family S 1 E 21 The Addams Family In Court

Go To

Morticia and Gomez return home from hunting bats to find Grandmama has set up a fortune-telling business. As this violates city ordinances, she gets arrested and the other Addamses go to court to fight for her freedom, in their own typically unusual way.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Courtroom Episode: Combined with Prison Episode. Grandmama is sent to prison due to illegally telling people's fortunes and the other Addamses go to court to try and free her.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Gomez mentions a relative who got imprisoned and was sent a cake that contained a hacksaw. He ate the hacksaw too and apparently developed a taste for them.
  • Karma Houdini: Grandmama is arrested for fortune-telling and the rest of the family nearly gets themselves indicted for contempt of court, but the judge's wife insists the charges be dropped because the prediction for her came true.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: The bailiff suggest the Addamses just pay the fine.
  • That Was Objectionable: Gomez opens the trial proceedings with an objection, before saying he wanted to see if the judge heard it. As the trial progresses, the entire family drives the judge nuts, including Uncle Fester who says "I Object!" just so he can participate in the trial, despite the fact that he is in the audience and thus obviously not supposed to interfere.
  • Threat Backfire: Judge Saunders tells the Addamses that he intends to see the law re-opens Alcatraz so he can send them there. Of course, the Addamses don't recognize this as a threat.
