Recap / The A Team S 5 E 13 The Grey Team

Go To

An unassuming young girl named Paula Anderson picks up the phone one afternoon to hear her father, a government scientist, having a conversation with a shady sort named Sarnoff, offering to sell secrets to Russia, involving the Strategic Defense Initiative, aka Star Wars. Fearing her father is going to betray the country, she steals his briefcase and runs away. Unbeknownst to her, Anderson is actually selling fake secrets as part of a sting operation to capture a KGB spy. Stockwell, who was in on the operation, calls in the A-Team to keep Paula safe, and to prevent her from blowing the operation. Along the way they end up working alongside the residents of a retirement home, one of whom is friends with Paula.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • And the Adventure Continues: This episode, which was always intended to be the Grand Finale, ended with this discussion:
Hannibal: Chasing thugs through the park...it's got a nice ring to it, doesn't it?
Face: It has a terrible ring to it.
Murdock: Just think, if we get a pardon, we may never have to eat a knuckle sandwich again.
B.A.: I wouldn't bet on it, Crazy Man. Looks like Hannibal's on the jazz again.
    Face: What, what, wha-
Murdock: No, you - you tell me right now, you tell me right to my face, you tell me that you don't have a plan.
Hannibal: Well I - I was thinking, what are we gonna do when this thing's over? I mean, what are we really qualified to do?
Face: Go after...thugs in the park?
Hannibal: And...outlaw motorcycle gangs, organized crime figures...why, there's a world of slimeballs out there.
Murdock: I knew it. I just knew you had a plan.
    Hannibal: Comforting, isn't it?
    B.A.: I'll get the van.
  • Energy Weapon: The Strategic Defense Initiative was one of these. Murdock also uses one to escape from the laboratory the KGB traps him in, by burning a hole through the wall.
  • Fake Defector: Mr. Anderson is pretending to sell secrets to Russia, but he's really just trying to lure out a KGB spy operating in the United States.
  • Grand Finale: The "specified number of missions" that Stockwell signed the team up for is finally done, and their Presidential pardon is due to be handed down any time. Hannibal finally tells Stockwell off, and agrees to do this one last mission only because he likes Anderson, not because of Stockwell. At the end, the team is told by the retirees they worked with about some hooligans messing things up in the city park, and decides to go after them, thereby giving the series an And the Adventure Continues ending. Lampshaded by Murdock, whose t-shirt in this episode bears the phrase "FINI", Latin for "THE END".
  • Honey Trap: Murdock tries to find out more about the KGB operation in America by posing as a scientist with the Star Wars program, and letting himself get taken captive. In order to escape, he talks the female officer holding him into sending away the guards and then tries to seduce her. She doesn't go for it.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: Paula Anderson is friends with retiree Bernie Green. Apparently they met when she was volunteering at the hospital when he went in for a gallbladder surgery, and they became close friends.
  • Never Mess with Granny: The folks at the retirement home don't take crap from anyone. They manage to capture B.A. and Frankie when those two go to find Paula, and later on they help take down the KGB spooks. Bernie Green and his friend Nemcek in particular insist that they want to join the A-Team at the end of the episode.
  • Right Hand Versus Left Hand: The FBI chases after Paula and drives her into hiding, and also gets in the Team's way repeatedly. Apparently Stockwell and his CIA buddies never let them in on the fact that Anderson is a fake traitor, and they've been staking him out thinking that his deal with Sarnoff is real. Stockwell also never informed the A-Team of this little complication, which is what finally provokes Hannibal to tell him off.
