Eye of the storm.
Little did they know, they were merely disposable chess pieces in the greatest game ever played.

Mission Hurricane is the third book in the fourth series of The 39 Clues, Doublecross.

Thirteen-year-old Dan Cahill and his older sister, Amy, know that a disaster is about to strike the world. They know they are the only ones who can stop it, and they know they may already be too late. The person behind the disaster is their own relative, a man who calls himself the Outcast. He's already re-created two of history's worst disasters, and is only biding his time before he strikes again.

The clues that the Cahill kids have gathered suggest that the Outcast's latest disaster is modelled after Hurricane Katrina. But what city will he target? And how can anyone conjure up a hurricane? Dan and Amy have no answers and very little time to find them. All they can count on is a tidal wave of trouble coming, and only them to stand in its way.

Tropes:

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Alek desires to catch Amy, Hamilton and Jonah at the hangar, all so that he can receive media attention for killing the three. Instead, he ends up being shot with tons of foam from a fire suppression system from Grace's secret room in the hangar, and is deemed by the media a rabid fan who tried to get too close to Jonah.
  • Big Damn Kiss: After relinquishing Cahill leadership to Amy, Ian and Cara share one. Dan isn't amused.
  • Broken Pedestal: This continues for Amy and Dan, with the former suffering from this the most. It gets worse when she, Jonah and Hamilton break into a secret room in Grace's hangar, and uncover files indicating that Grace monitored most of the Cahill family for their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Call-Back: The photographer at the beginning recognises Amy, calling her "one of those rich Cahill kids". This references J. Rutherford Pierce's Malicious Slander towards Amy's and Dan's public image in the previous series, Unstoppable.
  • Race Against the Clock: Dan sets his own timer before the nuclear bomb in the sea of the Netherlands detonates.
  • Take Up My Sword: After suffering one too many grievances with his leadership skills, Ian finally relents and gives back the role to Amy.
