Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: After being absent for most of the Season Bellamy returns to the spotlight in this episode showing what he was up to while everyone else thought he was dead.
  • Enemy Mine: Since they have a much better chance of reaching the Anomaly Stone together Bellamy and Doucette put aside their animosity in order to help each other reach the top of the mountain.
  • Face–Heel Turn: After being turned to the Disciples cause Bellamy betrays Clarke and their friends by revealing that the Flame was destroyed thus taking away the heroes leverage.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: Bellamy and Doucette begin the episode with a mutual disdain for each other due to their differing opinions and beliefs. Spending over two months with only each other as company causes them to become closer culminating in Bellamy saving Doucette's life when he could have let him drop to his death with the two embracing once they're back on Bardo.
  • Heel–Faith Turn: While Bellamy is pretty dismissive of the Disciples teachings at the beginning of the episode, seeing it as no different then the other cults he's had to content with, his time in Etherea causes him to start questioning himself considering the inexplicable things he encounters. By the end of the episode he has completely giving himself over to the Disciples teachings even referring to Cadogen as "my Shepard." This is deconstructed as Bellamy's new found faith in the Disciples causes him to turn on his friends and sell them out to Cadogen.
  • Leap of Faith: The gateway that the Anomaly Stone opens is found at the bottom of the mountain requiring a leap from there in order to reach it. Bellamy choosing to leap into the anomaly and arriving safely back in Bardo seems to be what fully converts him to the Disciples cause.
  • Minimalist Cast: With the exception of the scenes at the beginning and end of the episode taking place on Bardo the majority of the episode takes place on Etherea with only Bellamy and Doucette able to interact with each other.
  • Not Quite Dead: To the surprise of exactly no one Bellamy turns out not to have died in the explosion that seemingly killed him earlier in the Season and was instead blasted through the Anomaly Stone to another planet.
  • Wham Episode: Bellamy returns from supposedly being dead and ends up siding with the Disciples and betraying Clarke and his friends.
