Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 5 E 6 Nightmares Recycled

Go To

Whilst salvaging for parts, The Turtles and Hun end up in the Garbageman's realm once more, where Hun reveals that he and the Garbageman are siblings.

This episode would have revealed that The Garbageman and Hun were born as conjoined twins, separated at birth by a seedy, back-alley surgeon; the baby that would later become Garbageman was thrown in the trash, whereas Hun was kept and raised. 4Kids, not surprisingly, felt the subject matter was not appropriate for children, and scrapped the episode before it could be completed. This mind you, being the same company that greenlit "Insane in the Membrane", an episode in which they graphically show Baxter Stockman's cloned body falling apart onscreen.

This episode was never completed, although the script was written and some animation had begun when 4Kids decided the episode was simply too disturbing to air. The 2023 complete series DVD release actually acknowledges the episode's existence by having Disc 13 list episodes "109, 111-117", skipping this unproduced episode.

This episode provides examples of

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Hun, focusing on the reveal of his backstory.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Garbageman. This would've also been Hun's first appearance in the series since "Still Nobody".
  • Darker and Edgier: Holy frijoles, dudes. While the series was already known for its rather graphic violence and darker tones than what would normally be associated with the company, 4Kids themselves pulled the plug on the episode primarily due to this.
  • Enemy Mine: By all implications, Hun was going to team up with the Turtles, Casey, and April against his long-lost twin.
  • Freudian Excuse: Being discarded as garbage at birth probably would've been used to explain Garbageman's villainy.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: Garbageman would've been revealed as Hun's brother.
  • What Measure Is a Mook?: The script had scenes where Donnie and the others rather coldly attack and detain the Garbageman's henchmen. Peter Laird criticized this in his notes for the script since the Garbageman's henchmen are all unwilling conscripts.
