Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987) S06E15 "Mr. Nice Guy"

Go To

When Raphael accidentally zaps himself with Donatello's Personality Ray, it causes him to turn from moody and bitter to an ultra sweet Nice Guy. The only problem is it makes him too nice, to the point that he can't even fight criminals any more. Worse, when a mad scientist discovers what happened, he attempts to get ahold of the ray himself so he can use it to commit robberies and make anyone who opposes him too pacifistic to try to stop him.

Tropes

  • Birthday Hater: Raphael is revealed to be one, admitting that he hates having birthdays in the episode. The fact that the episode takes place during his is why he's even angrier than normal.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Donatello trips over his Personality Alterator and ends up zapping the two fighting fish Michelangelo bought for Raphael and the fish go from hating each other to being lovey dovey, he realizes that Raphael must have also accidentally been hit by it, explaining his sudden change in behavior.
  • Heel–Face Brainwashing: Raphael zaps Otto von Shrink with the Personality Ray at the end to make him become incredibly nice.
  • Running Gag: Someone commenting on a clever line said by someone else with "Nicely put.".
  • Sequel Episode: To "Leonardo Lightens Up". Once again one of the Turtles is accidentally zapped by Donatello's Personality Ray and gets their mood altered with disastrous results.
  • Sickeningly Sweet: The turtles begin finding Raphael's new friendly attitude sickeningly sweet. The fact that he even displays it to criminals doesn't help.
  • We Want Our Jerk Back!: While the rest of the turtles are initially happy that Raphael's become less cranky, they change their tune when he becomes so much of a nice guy that he's even friendly and helpful to the villains.
