Drinking the supernatural Kool-Aid
"Timing is key here, Lydia. It all needs to happen by the next full moon. Do you know what they call the full moon in March? It's called the Worm Moon. They call it that because it's the last full moon of winter. And the worms would literally crawl out of the earth as it thawed. Kind of has the feeling of a rebirth, doesn't it?"
Peter Hale

Lydia's mysterious hallucinations reach a violent climax, and Peter Hale's master plan becomes clear: he wants Lydia to use Derek to resurrect him. As a distraction, Lydia throws her birthday party at her house, where she poisons everyone with wolfsbane punch. Meanwhile, Victoria Argent comes to terms with the fact that she must die before she turns into a werewolf. When Jackson shows up at Lydia's party, circumstances make it very clear that the Kanima Master is nearby. The hallucinations caused by Lydia's wolfsbane-poisoned punch come to a sudden halt when it becomes obvious that Matt is controlling the Kanima.

Tropes

  • Actor Allusion: Inverted with Michael Hogan, who plays Gerard. Gerard is insistent that Chris Agent has to kill his wife before she becomes the enemy. Michael Hogan played Saul Tigh in Battlestar Galactica 2003, who himself was forced to kill his own wife by the resistance for sharing their plans with the Cylons on New Caprica.
  • Back from the Dead: Peter Hale.
  • Break the Cutie: Allison at the hospital when she learns her mom is dead.
  • Character Death: Victoria Argent.
  • Manly Tears: Chris Argent when he helps his wife kill herself and she dies in his arms. Again during the hospital scene when he has to comfort Allison after she finds out.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Victoria could have pushed harder for a talk with Allison before she decided she was going commit suicide that night.
  • The Reveal: Matt is Master of the Kanima.
  • Wham Episode: This episode features the resurrection of Peter Hale, the death of Victoria Argent, and the reveal that Matt is the Kanima Master—not to mention that it occurs on the night of a full moon.
This continues the trend that in Teen Wolf as a whole, the ninth episode of each season tends to be quite pivotal.
  • Wham Line: Scott and Stiles hear someone exclaim, "I can't swim!" When Jackson pulls said kid out the pool, it's revealed to be none other than Matt. As it was previously theorized by Deaton that the reason the Kanima fears water is because its master fears water, Scott and Stiles put two-and-two together that Matt is the Kanima's master.
  • "What Do They Fear?" Episode: Lydia spiked the punch with wolf's bane, causing everyone at the party to hallucinate their worst fears.
    • Allison fears of becoming a remorseless killer like her parents and aunt. This could also be read as her fear that she's too weak to hold her own in the supernatural world and arguably helps kickstart her vengeance in later episodes.
    • Stiles fears that his father blames him for his mother's death.
    • Scott fears that he's losing Allison and is scared of the Kanima.
    • Jackson fears that he has no face, no actual identity and that he's nobody.
    • Matt fears... water!
