Recap / Tale Spin Alls Whale That Ends Whale

Go To

The seventeenth episode of TaleSpin.

To earn the last of the money they need to buy the Sea Duck back from Rebecca, Baloo and Kit find a lost whale named Moby Dimple and turn him in to Seymour's See-More Seaquarium for the reward money. However, once they find out about the poor conditions that Dimple is forced to live in, they decide to set him free.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Anchovies Are Abhorrent: Baloo disguises Kit as a seal to distract Seymour while he rescues Dimple. As Seymour feeds the seals anchovies, Kit spits his out.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: Seymour is very abusive and neglectful of every animal in his care, but he is more interested in gaining profits than the ethical treatment of his animals, saying that such costs him money. When Baloo and Kit take notice of the animals' poor living conditions, Seymour tells them that since he owns the park, he can run it any way he pleases. When Baloo tries to get Seymour to see sense by having Inspector Burrough inspect the Seaquarium, Seymour pulls a few tricks to convince Burrough that he is taking good care of his animals. Fortunately, Seymour ends up arrested for possession of an illegal harpoon after Baloo turns Burrough's attention to it.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Perhaps a literal example; when Baloo and Kit first meet Seymour, Kit recognizes the Smith & Wessonoil double-barreled harpoon on Seymour's helicopter, which is illegal, but Seymour insists it's only illegal if used for hunting and is purely for decoration. Near the end of the episode, Baloo and Kit get Seymour to chase them past Inspector Burrough so he can see the harpoon and arrest Seymour.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: This exchange when Kit discovers Seymour's harpoon:
Kit: A Smith & Wessonoil double-barreled harpoon? Those things are illegal!
Baloo: They're against the law, too!
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Baloo returns to Higher for Hire to find a huge line of customers willing to pay Rebecca to find the missing whale for the reward money. When Baloo sees how much money the whale is worth, he gets the idea to return the whale himself so he can get the last of the money he needs to buy the Sea Duck back from Rebecca.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Baloo and Kit get the last of the money they need to buy the Sea Duck back from Rebecca, but when they see the poor conditions of Seymour's See-More Seaquarium, they first try to use the money to buy Dimple back from Seymour. When Seymour refuses, saying Dimple brings in 100 times that amount each day, Baloo and Kit use the money to buy the ACME Portable Whale Lift to rescue Dimple, feeling it only right since Dimple saved them from the sharks.
  • Fun with Acronyms:
    • A.C.H.O.O. stands for the Agency Concered with the Happiness of Oceanic Oddities.
    • When Baloo suspects that Seymour is pulling a scam to trick Inspector Burrough into thinking his aquarium complies with A.C.H.O.O.'s standards, Burrough responds by saying "If Scam stands for Super Clean And Marvelous, then you're right."
  • Gesundheit: Seymour says this to Inspector Burrough when the latter tells him he's with A.C.H.O.O., the former having mistaken it for a sneeze.
  • Punny Title: This episode's title is a pun on the saying "All's well that ends well".
  • Shark Pool: Seymour dips Baloo and Kit in one when they attempt to say goodbye to Dimple. Dimple rescues them by scaring the sharks off.
  • Shout-Out:
    • When Baloo accidentally knocks Kit's jar of peanut butter into his bucket of bait, Kit shouts "You've got bait in my peanut butter!" while Baloo shouts "You've got peanut butter in my bait!", a reference to the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercials.
    • The name of the missing whale is "Moby Dimple".
  • Status Quo Is God: Baloo and Kit finally earn enough money to buy the Sea Duck back from Rebecca so they can leave Higher For Hire when they return Dimple to Seymour, but when they see the poor living conditions of the Seaquarium, they use the money to buy the ACME Portable Whale Lift to rescue Dimple.
