"Toxic Work Environment" is the third episode of Superstore's fourth season.

After Jonah and Amy are found by their coworkers to have driven to work together, they lie and say they're carpooling to hide the fact they're secretly dating. In order to avoid suspicion, they start staging fake arguments to throw the others off the scent.

Meanwhile, Kelly is requesting a transfer to a different store, but Glenn hesitates to sign the transfer form because he sees them all as family and doesn't want any of the store employees to leave. In an attempt to get her to stay, he creates the "golden vest award" for her, which provokes jealousy in Mateo, who is frequently employee of the month. This causes him to start fighting with Kelly.

In addition, Carol is trying to steal Jerry back from Sandra, using cheap tactics to do so. This sparks a fight between them, and as a result of all the fighting, Glenn calls for a meeting about their toxic work environment. Eventually, Jonah convinces Glenn that Kelly is the toxic influence, by claiming that all of the infighting was caused by her arrival. This convinces him to sign the transfer slip.

Also, Cheyenne spends the day creating a real, and surprisingly good carpool, only to discover that nobody else is interested.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: Cheyenne spends the day creating an extremely comprehensive carpool that takes into account personalities and shifts, but at the end learns that many people don't want to carpool anyway.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Jonah and Amy's carpool. Everyone questions why they'd carpool if they live on opposite directions, but nobody catches on.
    • Jonah convinces Glenn that Kelly was the source of the store's chaos and fighting so Glenn signs the transfer papers.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Sandra and Carol are fighting over Jerry, Jonah suggests they just let Jerry decide. They all immediately reject that idea in favor of a coin toss.
  • Copycat Mockery: During the toxic workplace meeting, a roleplaying scenario where Jonah and Kelly play each other devolves into everybody doing rude impressions of Kelly and mocking her nasal voice.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • Kelly, with this being her last episode, gets focus regarding how she knows that she doesn't really fit in.
    • Sandra and Carol's subplot about Jerry comes to a head in this episode..
  • Hidden Depths: Cheyenne, who by the end of the episode, manages to design a surprisingly efficient carpool system for the store, only to learn that nobody else is interested.
  • Jerkass Realization: Sandra has one when she pretends to be Carol; unfortunately, Carol still wants revenge on Sandra.
  • Lost Him in a Card Game: Sandra loses Jerry to Carol in a coin toss.
  • Only Sane Man: Jonah, when suggesting they let Jerry decide whether to pick Sandra or Carol, an idea that everyone else disagrees with.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Basically the premise of the episode, although in the end Jonah convinces Glenn that Kelly is the source of all the chaos.
  • The Unishment: By the end, Jonah convinces Glenn that by getting rid of Kelly, he's getting rid of the source of all the chaos in the store. To do this, he gives her exactly what she wanted; a transfer to another store.
