"Sal's Dead"

Halloween day, and the employees find Creepy Sal's corpse in the drywall. Amy messes around with Jonah's dating app and accidentally matches him with Kelly.

Tropes:

  • All Part of the Show: The Cloud 9 customers mistake Sal's corpse as a fake display for Halloween and take pictures of it in awe. At the end of the episode, the corpse ends up stuck on a Halloween display.
  • Auto-Incorrect: Amy, pretending to be Jonah, texts Kelly, "You're so special" but "special" gets autocorrected to "spicy." This happens twice in a row.
  • Becoming the Mask: After Mateo dresses up as "creepy Sal," he ends up subconsciously acting creepy.
  • Catfishing: After accidentally matching with Kelly on Jonah's phone, Amy pretends to be Jonah and strikes up a long conversation that snowballs into more lies, such as claiming Jonah has a terminal disease.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Dina wears the same costume she wore last year.
    • They also wonder if it was Sal's foot that they found in the tornado (originally attributed to Brett). Turns out it's not.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Since Mateo is undocumented, he uses the recently dead Sal's passport and some heavy makeup to go to his cousin's wedding in the Philippines. He gives up on the charade because he finds himself actually acting as creepy as Sal.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Jokingly discussed; Garrett suggests finding a cursed object and swapping bodies with Jonah to solve the Kelly problem.
  • Halloween Episode: The episode takes place on Halloween and has the eerie plot of a corpse in the walls.
  • The Peeping Tom: Sal died drilling a hole into the women's bathroom.
  • A Rare Sentence: A variant when Jonah speaks with Kelly and Amy after he pretended to get stabbed: "I'm gonna go wash all this blood off... is a weird way to end a conversation."
  • Scare 'Em Straight: Amy hears Jonah and Kelly yelling at each other over the text messages, and finds them in the middle of a vicious argument with her accusing him of playing mind games and him insisting he has no idea what she's talking about. To Amy's horror, it culminates in Kelly grabbing a kitchen knife from a nearby shelf and seemingly stabbing Jonah to death — but it turns out they'd already figured out that the texts were from her, and set the whole thing up as a revenge prank.
  • Speak Ill of the Dead: Everyone but Kelly breathes a sigh of relief when they find out Sal is the corpse. Kelly's a little disturbed by the reaction until they inform her how creepy he was alive.
  • Streisand Effect: In-Universe, Glenn's attempt to dissuade the customers from going to the aisle where Sal's body is located only makes the customers more interested, mostly because Glenn's descriptions calling it "horrifying" just make it sound like a Halloween decoration.
  • Yellowface: Inverted when Mateo (a Filipino man) gets made up to look like the white Sal. Cheyenne refers to it as "creepface."
