Castiel is reunited with Jack and together with Sam and Dean, they head to a sleepy old western town to investigate a murder. Dean gets to live out his boyhood fantasy when he comes face to face with a famous, gun-slinging outlaw.
Tropes
- Ascended Fanboy: Dean is a huge cowboy fan, and gets to play one in Dodge City.
- Cowboy Episode: Dean geeks out over cowboy lore and even makes Castiel wear an absurd cowboy hat.
- Heroic BSoD: By the end of the episode, Jack is no longer enjoying having powers and hanging out with Team Free Will. He's genuinely afraid that his inability to control his power and how often he accidentally hurts or kills people means he's evil.
- It's Personal: Sarge shows up at Athena's house without his badge because getting Mather is a family matter, not a legal one.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Jack is extremely distressed when he accidentally kills the security guard while trying to stop the bad guy they were hunting.
- Mood Whiplash: Everybody is having fun indulging Dean's obsession with Westerns and gunslingers until Jack accidentally kills a guard.
- Parental Substitute: Sam and Dean are both parental surrogates to Jack, but he has a special bond with Castiel, whom he came to see as his adopted father while in the womb.
- Power Incontinence: Jack tries to use his powers to stop the bad guy but is unable to control the range of his powers and ends up killing an innocent guard.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Jack ultimately decides to leave the Winchesters, as he's worried that he might end up hurting them.
- Thou Shalt Not Kill Muggles: Breaking this rule sends Jack into a Heroic BSoD.
