Recap / Sue Thomas FB Eye S 3 E 1 Adventures In Babysitting

Go To

When Howie Fines claims to be in fear for his life after having seen a murder, the team is initially skeptical, but an attack on Howie and Sue turns it into an FBI matter. While watching over their witness, the FBI finds out that the matter goes far deeper than appearances would suggest and may net them a mob boss.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • A Fool and His New Money Are Soon Parted: Invoked; Howie goes undercover, saying he's inherited a lot of money and wants to do business with Mr. Jennings. Jack and Sue, in character as his attorneys, tell Jennings that Howie clearly knows nothing about handling money and suggest a dishonest transaction.
  • The Gambling Addict: Mr. Jennings says he heard rumors that Stan had a gambling problem. The FBI figures out that he didn't, going by the records he kept and his wife's testimony.
  • He Knows Too Much: Howie nearly gets shot a number of times after witnessing a murder. Later, the FBI tracks down the killer to find him dead, apparently at the hands of his bosses to keep him from talking.
  • Improvised Weapon: When confronting an intruder (who turns out to be Howie), Sue and Lucy pick up random objects from the apartment (for instance, Lucy has a racket of some kind).
  • Minor Crime Reveals Major Plot: Played With; murder is not exactly a small crime, but it turns out that the murder is only the tip of the iceberg behind massive business corruption and mob dealings.
  • Mock Millionaire: To get evidence that Jennings is crooked, Howie suggests he go undercover as inexperienced New Money to tempt the CEO to bilk him. Jack admits it's not a bad plan, and they go with it. Sue and Jack present themselves as his attorneys and the rest of the office fills in for the rest of the firm and assorted extras.
  • Reactive Continuous Scream: When Howie opens the door, he and Sue start screaming in shock at each other.
  • Red Baron: The mobster who shot Stan is known to the underworld and the FBI as Sammy the Snake.
  • Revealing Cover-Up: For the first part of the episode, the team wonders if Howie legitimately did see anything (given that there's no evidence) and points out that it's more a matter for the police than the FBI. Then someone tries to kill Howie in a drive-by shooting while Sue is with him. The fact that an FBI agent was nearly killed turns it into an FBI matter and brings the full force of the bureau down on the people involved.
  • Running Gag: The agents (especially Myles) threaten to shoot Howie more than once.
  • Shout-Out: The title refers to the movie Adventures in Babysitting.
  • Slobs vs. Snobs: A minor Running Gag has Howie and Bobby disagreeing over matters of cleanliness and organization. Howie wakes Bobby up early by cleaning up his crumbs from the previous night and is horrified when Bobby happily digs into the pizza that was left sitting out. He also criticizes Bobby's desk for being disorganized. Bobby insists he has his own organizational system and threatens Howie if he touches anything.
  • Too Much Information: While Howie is explaining what happened, he tells Sue and Jack that he was out in the alley to relieve himself because the line for the bathroom was too long. Jack tells him he's very close to providing too much information, but Howie justifies it as trying to be thorough.
  • Trespassing to Talk: Terrified after nearly being shot twice in a night (once outside his apartment), Howie sneaks into Sue and Lucy's apartment to beg for protection (and to use the bathroom).
  • You Dirty Rat!: Part of Howie's fixation on cleanliness seems to be an attempt to avoid vermin; he mentions that leaving crumbs and food around can attract rats and cockroaches.
