Tropes:
- Adaptation Amalgamation: References to Mavis' debut episode are made, combined with dialogue from "Toby's Tightrope."
- Adaptational Dye-Job: Kate gains a green livery at the end of the episode.
- Armor-Piercing Question: Toby asks Mavis if she thinks her "new system" has improved anything for the quarry. It takes awhile before she solemnly admits that it hasn't.
- Break the Haughty: Mavis gets this when the stone trucks' brakes snap and Toby saves her.
- Call-Back: The scene where Toby saves Mavis looks very similar to Brian saving Edward in "Return".
- Double-Meaning Title: The title refers to Kate's training on the Ffarqhuar branch line and Mavis being trained at the quarry.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Sir Topham Hatt admits that putting Kate on a busy branch line with inconsistent supervision was a bad idea, and transfers her to the Ffarqhuar branch.
- This Is Gonna Suck: Whiff and Percy get this after Mavis' first impression.

- First when he bumps the stone trucks so roughly, the brake pipes end up damaging.
