Chapter 8: After School

Nanako leaves school early and goes to the police station, seeing that her father isn't there and trying hard to mask her nervousness. The receptionist waves her back and her father's longtime assistant, Yamamoto, opens Ryotaro's office at her claim that she came to pick something up for him. The office is plain with the most noteworthy items being the three photographs on the desk: Ryotaro and Kaho's wedding, a double frame of Nanako at six years old and her most recent school picture (making her consider changing her hairstyle), and Yu's graduation from university. She takes strength from Yu, even knowing he may not approve, as she goes through the office, sure that her luddite father will have the password written down.

In the bottom of the filing cabinet, she finds that all codes are set to her birthday, 1004. She makes to leave before noticing two bulging files in the back of the drawer labeled CHISATO and ADACHI. Touching the dusty files, she muses over whether her father actually found something about her mother's death by hit-and-run, and reflects on how she still doesn't know how she was involved in the case that happened ten years ago, and nobody told her.

Ryotaro texts her about dinner, and she takes it as a sign to stop snooping. As she leaves, she texts Ren that she got the code.

Chapter 9: Evening

At dinner, Ren texts Nanako about doing the heist that night, and unwilling to give him the code, this puts her in the unfortunate circumstance of having to lie to her parents. She makes up an excuse about studying with girls from school for the upcoming math test, and while Ryotaro is inquisitive about her going out on a school night, Kaho talks him down from being too strict, and he concedes with a curfew.

She dresses in dark clothes and leaves her schoolbag at the shrine along the way to the school, where Ren is waiting. Nanako refuses to give him the code, saying she wants to believe he's doing this for the right reasons but doesn't know him well enough to be sure, and insists on going in with her. Ren reluctantly agrees.

Chapter 10: Night

The two scale the wall and Ren picks the lock to the front door. As Nanako prepares to disable the alarm, Ren stops her at seeing she's not wearing gloves, and for time constraints, Nanako uses his gloved hand to punch in the code as he looks away. They make their way to the principal's office and soon find all the phones he'd confiscated, with Okura's on top. They hide as they hear voices outside: Kashiwagi and Vice Principal Kudo-san are there for a late-night affair, as Kudo-san is married. Ren and Nanako share a laugh at their mutual disgust.

They leave and return to the front gate, and praise each other on a job well done. After a minute, Ren pulls her close and kisses her, and she's lost in the fantasy for a minute before a spotlight falls on them from a police officer. Ren hides Nanako's face as he talks his way out of trouble, and they leave the campus. Nanako thanks him again, and takes his offer to walk her home. She says she'll tell her father everything that happened with Okura other than the night's heist, and at her mentioning that she almost never lied, Ren remarks that the law isn't always right. Before they part ways, Nanako gives Ren permission to call her by her given name, and quietly reflects on whether to count the night's events as her first kiss.
