Recap / SPY×FAMILY - Anime: S03 E07

Go To

Yor faces off against Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby on SS Princess Lorelei's shopping promenade, where Anya makes it seem like some of the circus acrobats are doing an impromptu performance. After some hesitation, Yor manages to find an opening and knocks Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby unconscious. Meanwhile, Loid comes out of the fitting room, and Anya tells him he looks "lame" in his getup. At the same time, the enemy assassin that proposed they all work together and share the prize money goes into Cabin 3085, and after determining that Olka Gretcher even changed her perfume, he calls Snoops to ask where the Gretchers are, only for Snoops to say he's still looking into it. As he finishes his conversation, Snoops listens into the conversation between two other assassins who think Snoops will take credit for killing the Gretchers, so once the job is done, they'll kill him and take the money for themselves, which causes Snoops to say he needs to be ready for anything.

After helping Yor confront Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby, Anya stumbles from being sleepy, and despite wanting to help Yor, Loid carries her off to their cabin and puts her to bed, while wondering how busy Yor is with work that she didn't call them that evening. Meanwhile, in Cabin 3016, Yor reassures the Gretchers they aren't being followed and there are no listening devices in the cabin. After Zeb has a breakdown over the fact they are being hunted down by a gang of assassins, Olka asks him why he decided to escape with them when he could've gotten a job within Hapoon's syndicate, and Zeb responds that he owes his gratitude to her father, whose black marked allowed him to eat and survive during the post-war shortages. After saying that, he adds that can't work for Hapoon because of his connections to warmongering extremists, and that he would pummel any assassin who tries to get to them, only to freak out when he hears a door knock. The Director comes in and orders the Gretchers to get some rest, because the next day they'll meet up with their contact and escape, and tells Yor to look after the clients while he scouts the rest of the ship. When Zeb questions the assassins' lifestyle of being surrounded by death all the time as if the war never ended, the Director responds that in way the war is still ongoing as he's still killing for his country, and bluntly order orders Yor to not let her guard down, as it could cost them their lives and leaves the cabin. As the Gretchers sleep, Yor realizes that the reason she hesitated earlier is because if she got injured to the point she can't hide her wounds, she would be forced to leave her family as she falls asleep.

The following day, after Frankie chats with a woman while walking Bond, he entertains the idea of adopting Bond to help him land more dates. Back at the Lorelai, the Director tells the civil servants that they can have the rest of the trip to themselves as the Grecthers do not want to be bothered due to Shaty being angry at Furseal for soiling himself again. Meanwhile, Loid tries to be a doting father to Anya, who tries to keep him occupied so that she can run off to help Yor, but her attempts fail, as she spends the whole day having fun with him instead of helping Yor. Loid notices Anya's upset, and to cheer her up, he promises to take her to the fireworks show later in the evening. That night, the Director gets a coded message and tells Yor and the Gretchers to get ready, because four hours later the rendezvous boat will reach them and they will have to move quickly to get on and escape. Meanwhile, Snoops intercepts the coded message, and while he couldn't decipher it, he deduces it's from the Gretchers' contact, as it used a different encryption than the SSS uses, and sends a message to the assassins to get ready because they'll need to ambush their targets before they get away.

The episode includes the following tropes:

  • All Part of the Show: Yor fighting an assassin in the ship's lobby draws the attention of other cruise guests. Anya helps her out by making everyone believe the fight scene is a circus act.
  • Cerebus Retcon: In "Follow Mama and Papa", Yor ended up with a serious injury that she tried to hide from her family and it was Played for Laughs. During her fight with Barnaby, she shows hesitation about getting hurt as she fears that she'd end up with another grievous injury that she wouldn't be able to hide from her family.
  • Chain Pain: Yor's opponent uses a chain as his weapon of choice.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Mixed with a bit of Notice This. While two bald-headed goons talk with each other about betraying Snoops, the camera zooms in on one of their cuff buttons. If one pays close attention, the last button has a faint white color around it instead of black like the others, showing that it's actually a listening device that Snoops planted on them without their knowing.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • In the previous episode, the Director uses Furseal's (nonexistent) Potty Emergency as an excuse to rush him back to the cabin. In this episode, he claims Furseal had an (equally nonexistent) Potty Failure from that, as an excuse for the two bona fide civil servants to not attend for "Furseal" and "Shaty".
    • Yor takes out Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby with pressure points just like she did with the Moo Cow at the school early on.
  • Desperate Plea for Home: Zeb has a breakdown over the fact they are being hunted down by a gang of assassins and whines that he wants to go home.
  • Didn't Think This Through: As Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby squares off against Yor, he begins to think that fighting her in a crowded hallway full of witnesses is not the best idea.
  • Even the Dog Is Ashamed: After his mother chews out Zeb for panicking over their situation, Baby Gram also expresses disappointment over his cowardice.
  • Failure Montage: Anya intends to keep helping Yor on her Escort Mission, but first she has to keep Loid busy. She's seen trying, and failing, to keep Loid occupied while she runs off to help Yor, first by playing golf, then by going to the library, skating, and finally a magic show. At dinner, Anya feels disappointed in herself for having fun with Loid instead of distracting him and helping Yor.
  • Impossibly Tacky Clothes: After Yor knocks out Chain-and-Sickle-Barnaby, Loid comes out of the fitting room in a garish outfit composed of all the clothes Anya recommended. Anya tells him he looks "lame."
  • Mood Whiplash: The most prominent example is the scene in Cabin 3016. Zeb laments getting involved in a situation where he's being hunted down by vicious assassins and Olka calls him out for being such a coward, and baby Gram makes a face to show he's disappointed in Zeb, and Zeb tells her he got involved because her father's Black Market allowed him to get food in the post-war scarcity, and his memory of her giving him a piece of bread implies he may have a crush on her. After he claims he would face off against the next assassin that came after them, he freaks out when the Director knocks on the door. When the Director briefs them of their plans, to rendezvous with the escape boat, he orders Yor to keep an eye on the Gretchers while he scouts the rest of the ship, and when Zeb questions how they can be so calm with all the killing and dying around them as if they were still fighting the war, the Director answers that the war never really ended, so he has to keep killing for his country (referencing Zeb's statement about Hapoon having connections with militant extremists), and orders Yor to not let her guard down, or it would mean certain death for all of them. After the Gretchers fall asleep, Yor wonders if being an assassin is worth it, since being wounded in a way that she can't hide injuries would mean that she would have to abandon Loid and Anya.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Downplayed. During dinner, Anya overhears Loid's thoughts on how he's been stressing himself over not being able to be the perfect dad because of her mood swings. Even though her anger was more at herself for not being the help to her mom that she wanted, she realized that she wasn't making things easier for her dad throughout their cruise adventure.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: After Zeb complains that he can't handle being hunted down by assassins, Olka asks him why didn't he stay in Ostania and work for Hapoon instead. Zeb answers that he owes the original Boss, her father, his life, as without the food his family got through the Black Market the Gretcher Crime Family set up and ran, he would've starved to death in the scarcity of the post-war reconstruction. Besides that, he couldn't in good conscience work for Hapoon, who is in league with some pro-war extremists.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Snoops hears two assassins accusing him of wanting to take credit for killing the Gretchers, so they conspire to kill him and claim the prize money themselves. This leaves Snoops thinking he needs to be ready if the other assassins go after him once the hit is done.
  • The Nose Knows: After breaking into the abandoned suite, the Four-Eyed Assassin takes a big whiff and instantly identifies the targets of interest based on their respective scents and perfume choices.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: At dinner time, Loid notices that Anya is upset, and assumes it's because he's not the doting father she wants, when in reality she's upset with herself because she spent all day having fun with Loid instead of keeping him busy while she helps Yor.
  • Rummage Sale Reject: Loid emerges from the fitting room with various non-matching pieces of clothing and accessories.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: As Yor confronts Chain-and-Sickle Barnaby, Anya cheers for the circus act in the hallway, and the rest of the witnesses assume some acrobats are staging an impromptu street performance.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Hopeless Suitor Franky catches a woman's interest while walking Bond; she even expresses eagerness to see him later on.
