* OldShame: Spider-Man's wrestling career prior to becoming a superhero. After all, it was from the studio that the crook who stole money from them was getting away, he refused to provide assistance. It was only until he tried to avenge the murder of Uncle Ben that he discovered it was the same crook he saw escaping the studio that he realized, that if he'd have used his powers for good then instead of self-interest, his uncle would still be alive.

At the opening of a new medical facility paid for by the Hardy Foundation, Spider-Man soon finds himself in combat with Doctor Octopus again, but because of their fight, the medical facility is destroyed, and Spidey blames himself for it, deciding to retire from crime-fighting out of guilt.

At the Bugle, Robbie hands Peter a letter from a fan of Spider-Man who wants to meet him, but Peter crumples it up and throws it away. However, later on, he soon has his first encounter with Madame Web, who cryptically tells him to have the heart of a child before sending him back to the alley where she whisked him from to her dimension, with the Tarot card she gave him becoming the same letter he threw away at the Bugle earlier. Deciding to look into it, Spider-Man travels to the home of the young girl who's his biggest fan, who likes to be called "Taina". Spider-Man then goes into a much more detailed version of how he became the superhero that he is today.

Flashing back to Peter's days in college, when Peter attended the demonstration involving Neogenics, he was bitten by a spider that had strayed into the beam as was now radioactive. As Peter began to feel dizzy from the spider venom, he staggered out into an alley, where he began to hallucinate, starting with watching his hands and arms turn a bright red before transforming into a pair of brown, hairy, spider arms, causing Peter to pass out and have two nightmares:

The first one has him now the size of a spider, but with his human head attached to a brown, hairy, spider's body, being confronted by his Aunt May in the kitchen of her home, who after several attempts to swat Peter, despite his pleas not to attack him, washes him down the sink's drain using the faucet.

The second one has Peter waking up on the East River, apparently back to human size, until he discovers that while he may be human size again, his body is still that of a brown, hairy spider, now just human size. When he scares the crew of a nearby passing barge into jumping ship, he's attacked by the military when they deem him dangerous, leading to where he trips up and takes a rocket to his exposed tender underside.

He soon wakes up from the nightmares and realizes he's still human, but soon discovers his newfound spider-like abilities and decides to create web-shooters and his trademark costume. Meanwhile, Doctor Octopus shows off his newest invention to the Kingpin and Smythe: The Octobot, which can use Smythe's Spider Seekers as its eyes to help take down Spider-Man.

When Spidey decides to take Taina on a trip around NYC, they are ambushed by Doc Ock and the Octobot, resulting in where Spidey tries to fight off the two of them, but ends up being gassed and knocked out, leading Taina to watch as Doctor Octopus prepares to finish off Spider-Man once and for all, much to her despair.
