After Mary Jane goes missing after apparently seeing her father, Peter investigates as Spider-Man, and soon finds himself teaming up with Dr. Strange to face the latter’s nemesis, Baron Mordo.

- Abusive Parents: Mary Jane's father was an emotionally abusive man who often mistreated her and her mother when she was little, before he abandoned them.
- Battle Butler: Strange’s assistant Wong is portrayed as this, compared to the Ethnic Menial Labor he was in the comics, or the Always Someone Better he is in the MCU.
- Big Bad: Mordo’s master Dormammu, who aims to escape his prison dimension and bring ruin to the world.
- Establishing Character Moment: Anna Watson blaming Peter for her niece’s disappearance makes clear what kind of person she is.
- Evil Counterpart: Mordo to Strange. While they were both students to the Ancient One, unlike Strange, Mordo attempted to betray and kill the Ancient One, and then began to serve Dormammu.
- Lotus-Eater Machine: Mordo lured in Mary Jane and his other minions by presenting them with images of lost loved ones. He almost lures Peter in the same way.
