Recap / Spartacus Blood And Sand S 1 E 12 Revelations

Go To

We begin with the execution of Good Solonious, and then continue as news of Legatos Glaber's arrival in Capua spurs hope of patronage among the House of Batiatus. Unfortunately, as expected from an episode titled "Revelations", there are a lot of secrets due to come out, and Spartacus has already set his sights on killing Batiatus in revenge.

Tropes:

  • Abortion Fallout Drama: Aurelia is revealed to have aborted the child she was carrying, presumably because she wouldn't be able to work for Batiatus while pregnant.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Mira seems annoyed that Spartacus won't let her touch him.
  • Asshole Victim: Hector, the guard who attacked Mira, is beheaded as punishment for losing the key to the cell.
  • Break the Haughty:
    • Ilithyia is struck by her husband when Licinia's murder is revealed to him, and forced to stay in Capua essentially as Batiatus's slave.
    • Lucretia gets told to her face that Crixus never loved her, and that Quintus already knew. He also commands her for the first time in the series to end the affair for good.
  • The Bus Came Back: Aurelia is revealed to have enslaved herself to pay off Varro's remaining debts.
  • Chekhov's Boomerang:
    • Licinia's murder is used by Batiatus to blackmail Glaber into giving them patronage.
    • The matter of Barca's death, which Oenomaus had questioned Naevia about, comes back into play. On being sent away, she realises she has no reason to keep the secret anymore, and tells him the truth.
  • Clark Kent Outfit: Solonius is revealed to be pretty ripped, as he has to face Spartacus wearing nothing but a loincloth.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After taking so much abuse from Lucretia, Naevia gladly taunts her with the following.
"Crixus never loved you! He did only as commanded."
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • When Crixus charges at him, Ashur actually pushes Naevia aside, presumably not wanting her to get hurt in the crossfire.
    • Lucretia is annoyed at Naevia being given to Ashur. While she wanted her to be given to "a man of worth", she is repulsed by the idea of Naevia having to sleep with him.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Solonius puts up a decent fight against Spartacus, who notes his skill. On learning that Spartacus knows the truth about Batiatus and plans to kill him soon, Solonius dies laughing.
  • Groin Attack: Lucretia actually kicks Naevia down there, while putting emphasis on the line "your filthy slave cunt!"
  • Honor Before Reason: Aurelia refused Spartacus's winnings being used to pay off Varro's debts, and volunteered to work them off herself.
  • Manly Tears: Crixus starts weeping when Naevia is sent away, and it becomes a borderline Cry into Chest.
  • Marital Rape License: Ashur has Naevia given to him as a wife so that he can sleep with her just to hurt Crixus.
  • A Million Is a Statistic: Mira calls Spartacus on being indifferent to the idea that all the slaves would be put to death if he killed Batiatus, but having second thoughts the second his best friend's wife would be included in the casualties.
  • Nice to the Waiter: Shockingly enough, by this house's standards. Aurelia brings the wrong platter, and Batiatus brushes it aside, telling Lucretia that she's only there as an act of kindness.
  • One-Man Army: Spartacus rather easily takes out a number of Glaber's men all rushing him at once in the villa.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Naevia told Crixus that Ashur was who she was given to, she probably could have avoided the very public spectacle that unfolds in the villa.
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: We see Ashur pulling Naevia's dress off and the shot fades out over her Toplessness from the Back.
  • A Taste of the Lash: Crixus is strung up and whipped repeatedly at the end of the episode.
  • Traumatic Haircut: We spend a few minutes thinking Lucretia's "bring me a knife" request was so she could kill Naevia. But at the end of the episode, we see that she just cut all her hair off.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: Glaber's men being in the villa sees an increase in brutality towards the slaves, though this will become more apparent in the next episode.
  • Woman Scorned: Lucretia is furious when she finds out of Naevia's affair with Crixus and beats her especially violently, before sending her away.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Glaber strikes Ilithyia when he learns that she murdered Licinia.
