Tropes

  • Art Shift: The opening of the episode shows Sonic and Tails battling Dr. Eggman in an 16-bit style animation based on Sonic Advance 3.
  • Batman Gambit: Nine knows Sonic long enough to know how far the hedgehog will go to save everyone. He sends a new flock of Grim Birdies to abduct Dread's crew from No Place, expecting Sonic's Chronic Hero Syndrome will kick in. This way, Nine can either attempt to get Sonic or lure him back to the Grim with the pirates as hostages.
  • The Cavalry: To both Nine and Sonic's surprise, the alliance between the Chaos Council and Shatterverse/Resistance come to the Grim to save Sonic and stop Nine.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Sonic's case of this is discussed and deconstructed throughout the episode. He insists on rescuing the remaining pirates in No Place even though it means leaving himself open to Nine (which is exactly what Nine is counting on); repeatedly justifies it with No One Gets Left Behind even as both the Resistance and the Chaos Council point out that he used a disproportionate amount of time doing so; and when he ultimately gives himself up to Nine, the fox spells out that the real reason Sonic's so insistent on saving everyone is to soothe his own guilt about destroying Green Hill, not just sheer heroism.
  • Heroic Vow: Despite both the resistance and Chaos council trying to argue with Sonic not to go rescue Dread's remaining crew, he stubbornly heads out anyway, swearing to save them from bring faded off with their shatter world, later followed by Dr. Deep and Dr. Done it. After claiming that it’s a win for both sides, Mr. Dr Eggman complains about damaged property and troops spent with the feeling of being mentally beaten, but Sonic pointed out that losing people is not an option, making it clear that every person’s life must be saved from the shattering of reality Nine’s causing.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Sonic actually seems to be starting to get through to Nine a bit, telling him that even after everything he's been doing he still considers him a friend... only for any progress to be wiped out when the Resistance/Chaos Council alliance, who don't know Nine as well as Sonic and were certain the fox wouldn't keep his word, burst into the Grim after tracking Sonic's location. The episode ends on Nine's face shifting from shock and hurt to pure fury.
  • On One Condition: Worried that he may not have a chance to save the rest of the Shatterverse, Sonic offers to have Nine complete the Grim as long as he can repair the other worlds for everyone to return to.
  • Tempting Fate: Lampshaded. Just as Sonic remarks, "We're almost home free!", another lightning bolt strikes the ship he's riding on and almost knocks him overboard.
Sonic: Why do I keep saying stuff like that?!
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Nine believes he has figured out why Sonic is the hero he is and why it's likely to cost him everything, including his own life.
Nine: You know, after all this time, I think I finally understand you, Sonic. [...] You want to save everyone; friends, foes, total strangers. You say it's because you're a hero, and that's what heroes do... but deep down, after what you did, destroying your own home, it's the only way you can ever live with yourself, even if that means you won't live at all.
  • Villainous Rescue: Dr. Done-It and Dr. Don't jump into No Place to help Dread's crew escape their falling world.
