Recap / Solar Opposites S1 E8 - "Retrace-Your-Step-Alizer"

Go To

Pupa has turned orange and Terry and Korvo are worried about what it means. Luckily, Korvo has a Pupa information card in his wallet but said wallet is on the planet Shlorp. So, they must use the Retrace-Your-Step-Alizer to retrieve it but unknowingly causes a space-time ripple effect.

Meanwhile, Yumyulack finds that Jesse has a nicer version of him called Fumyulack in the Pretend-O-Deck, and tries to better himself.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Continuity Nod: Jesse is shown to be cleaning out the Wall, and disposing of Molly the Mouse from "Korvo and Terry Steal a Bear", curious as to why the Wall is wet. She also mentions they invented religion, another nod from the previous episode.
  • Contrived Coincidence: Almost stated by name. Terry mentions that all of the plotlines colliding at the end of the episode seems a little contrived. It turns out he's right: Korvo, Terry, and Jesse were locked in the Pretend-o-Deck the whole time.
  • Foreshadowing: There are quite a few hints that Korvo and Terry are trapped in the Pretend-o-Deck. before the reveal.
    • Vanbo never had a replicant. It's implied that as a population booster, the adults who escaped were issued Replicants.
    • Vanbo seems to have no role beyond being a Jerkass to Korvo and Terry and forcing them to do chores. It has been earlier established that the Shlorpians were supposed to land on an uninhabited world, so having a teammate who does nothing but get you to do chores wouldn't bode well.
    • Vanbo's return is marked with him in alien prosthetics. However, many episodes depict the fact the Shlorpians have access to advanced medicine, meaning Vanbo should've been completely fine.
    • Terri - now Vanbi - says she switched to being Vanbo's science partner. Earlier, the episode depicted Shlorp as totalitarian, and she was shown assisting Terry with his Pupa studies. This switch likely wouldn't be permitted.
    • In the flashbacks Korvo and Terry reminisce about, Vanbo is inserted into all of them, despite the fact they supposedly fixed the time stream.
  • Noodle Implements: The real Yumyulack enters the Pretend-o-Deck with a jar of peanut butter and some tissues.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Jesse says that a fortune cookie told her she would kill Yumyulack and shrink him into a Gameboy Cartridge.
    • Terry brings up the time the family saw Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and the time they teamed up against the Simpsons against the Monstars.
    • Korvo mentions the time when everything was a musical.
  • Pet the Dog: Pupa lets an elderly neighbor, Lorraine, witness memories of her dead mother, in exchange for stealing a Harry Potter whistle and some batteries from the cabinet.
  • The Reveal:
    • Jesse realizes that she did not kill the holographic Yummyulack but the real Yummyulack, and that Yummyulack actually did become nice.
    • Subverted with Vanbo and Terri. Vanbo mentions that Shlorp never blew up and he is going to take the family back to Shlorp for using a Retouch-Your-Stuff-Alizer without a license, and then blow up the Earth. However, Terry makes the point that it is too much of a Contrived Coincidence for this to happen, and it is revealed Pupa left Korvo, Terry, and Jesse in the Pretend-o-Deck.
    • It is implied that Pupa is maturing at a fast rate, and at the end of the episode, he turns purple and breaks the fourth wall.
  • You Didn't See That: When Jesse kills and turns Yumyulack into a Gameboy cartridge in the frozen yogurt shop she tells the owner to forget what he saw. The guy says he can't because everything she did was incredibly specific.
