Recap / Sofia The First S 1 E 19 Princess Butterfly

Go To

It's time for the annual All Hallows Eve costume ball at Royal Prep, and this year, the students have to make their own costumes instead of relying on their seamstresses. The problem is that Amber has never even done any sewing, and when she sees that Sofia has made a beautiful swan costume, she turns to Cedric for a magic spell. But Cedric sees this as a way to get Sofia's amulet. What's more, the spell turns Amber into a human butterfly, and Cedric says that the only way to undo it is with Sofia's amulet. Now Amber has to make a big decision: get Sofia's amulet and keep her unfairly won trophy or come clean, so her sister can keep her amulet.

Tropes

  • An Aesop: Cheating has its consequences, and thievery isn't the right way to fix a problem.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: The lesson that Amber learned in the episode.
  • Clingy Costume: Because the spell has turned Amber into an actual human butterfly, she is unable to remove her costume.
  • Disappointed in You: The fairies say this word for word to Amber when she confesses that she cheated in the costume contest by using magic to make her costume.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Amber becomes jealous when she sees Sofia's swan costume and realizes that her sister is sure to win this year's costume contest.
  • Halloween Episode: Part of the episode takes place on Halloween.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Sofia decides to give Amber her amulet, so the latter can get back to normal. Amber refuses to let this happen because it's not fair that her sister should lose her amulet because she cheated.
  • I Gave My Word: When Amber asks Sofia for her amulet so Cedric can undo the butterfly spell on her, Sofia reminds her that she promised to never take it off and must keep it no matter what. Much to her surprise, Amber refuses to take it because she knows that covering up her mistake by taking her sister's amulet isn't fair to her.
  • Irony: Cedric pretends that the spell is supposed to give Amber a butterfly costume when it's really supposed to turn someone into a human butterfly.
  • Karma Houdini: Subverted. Sofia was going to let Amber pull this by offering her amulet to her sister to take to Cedric, so she could get away with her cheating. But Amber refused to take the amulet, believing it's not fair that her sister should lose her amulet because she did something bad. While Amber didn't receive a punishment for lying and cheating, she was told to give back the trophy.
  • Noodle Incident: Amber won the costume contest in the past two years.
  • Oh, Crap!: Amber, Clio, and Hildegard have this reaction when the fairies announce that the students have to make their own costumes.
  • Only One Finds It Fun: While her sister and her friends are shocked at the news, Sofia is excited that she'll have to make her own costume. Clio is the only one of Amber's Girl Posse who actually made her costume and admits that she had fun though it wasn't easy.
  • So Proud of You: Sofia says this to Amber at the costume ball when she believes that her sister made her costume by herself. Even the fairies tell Amber that they're glad that she owned up to her misdeed and learned from it.
  • Sore Loser: Amber doesn't like the idea of losing the costume contest, not even to her own sister, which is why she went as far as cheating to win. After realizing that cheating wasn't worth it and that it isn't fair to Sofia to give up her amulet for a mistake she made, she decides to confess to the fairies what she did.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Amber becomes one to Cedric.
