Davis is caught in an explosion and taken captive by Tess, who reveals more about his origins and his destiny as the one fated to kill Clark.

Tropes present in the episode:

  • Batman in My Basement: The episode ends with Chloe agreeing to let Davis, who reveals himself to still be alive, stay in the Talon basement.
  • Driven to Suicide: Davis. It fails, thanks to his regenerative abilities.
  • I Cannot Self-Terminate: Because he comes back to life each time he's killed, Davis learns of his vulnerability to Kryptonite and asks Chloe to help him die by exposing himself to Kryptonite. It ends up not working.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Young!Davis killing Lex's pet bird mirrors the very first thing Doomsday did upon arriving on Earth in The Death of Superman.
  • Principles Zealot: Chloe briefly calls Clark on this in the final act.
Clark: But there's always another way.
Chloe: [Davis] could have killed you, Clark. I won't risk the safety of the world because of your code of ethics because you refuse to stop the things that threaten you.
  • Time-Shifted Actor: Alex Ferris plays Davis as a child in flashbacks.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Clark calls Chloe out for not telling him about Davis's blackouts.
Clark: The guy blacks out regularly, and you chose not to mention it?
Chloe: I figured he had low blood sugar or something.
Clark: He told you he was hiding something dark inside, Chloe! That didn't set off any alarms for you?
Chloe: You know what, I figured "dark" meant "moody" or "bipolar," at worst. I don't exactly jump right to "serial killer."
Clark: And all the times that you were angry at me for doubting him—
Chloe: I know, okay?! I was in denial. I- You know, I-I couldn't believe that it was this bad.
Clark: It's not that bad, Chloe. It's worse.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: Davis states his belief that Clark was meant to have a better life than he did.
Clark: Everything that's happened to you is because of me. All right? We should have been brothers. Davis, you didn't have a home. If that would have happened to me, I've always wondered what it would have been like if the Luthors had found me in that field. I could have turned out differently.
Davis: But you didn't. You were destined to have the better life. No matter how hard we try to fight it, we will always return to our true nature.
